WARNING! Carbon monoxide fumes from a barbecue.

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by VWOlive, Aug 30, 2011.

  1. A family of five were rescued from their tent after being overcome by carbon monoxide fumes from a barbecue.
They were taken to hospital after emergency services were called to Trevella Park at Crantock, near Newquay, Cornwall, just after midnight.
The two adults and three children have now been released from hospital.
Firefighters warned of the dangers of having a barbecue inside a tent and said the outcome could have been very different.
Shaun Taylor, the watch manager at Newquay Fire Station, said: "We found that the occupants of the next tent had helped in rescuing the family from the tent.
"We discovered they had a lit barbecue inside the tent. Any item that produces heat or vapours can cause carbon monoxide poisoning. That was our concern.
"If the dad hadn't woken up and the people in the next tent hadn't got the people out we would have been looking at a very sad and serious situation this morning."

Was this a gas bbq Jo?

I'm always wary of using the little stove in the westy so, as soon as we have done we disconnect the gas bottle and remove the adaptor. We always open the sliding door too and the vented window..dont know if we have suffered any long term effects though (quite probably)

  3. i always keep the gas turned off and make sure that as soon as we finish cooking its shut off again.

i also have a carbon monoxide alarm in the van ... which is great for waking people up in the morning using the test button.

  4. i've seen quite a few times where people have taken the bbq coals into a van or tent to keep themselves warm and have been overcome by carbon monoxide fumes.

In a westy there should be a rather large vent (about 20cm x 20cm) underneath the cooker/gas bottle unit. The gas is heavier than air so sinks to the floor, if you don't have the vent then any gas that leaks will fill the van up from the floor upwards.

For carbon monoxide fumes it is always wise to ensure you have a window cracked open when using the gas appliances indoors. There is a formula somewhere which tells you how much fresh air you need circulating v the output of the appliance. Never us an unvented gas appliance when you'resleeping.

Things like propex are quite safe as not only do they vent to the outside, they also have a safety cut-off
    ;D

Some people dont have the brains they were born with.
A BBQ in a tent?? Genius.

These sorts of people are the reason McDonalds have "Caution - contents may be hot" on their coffee cups.

back on the methane topic, i usually find my 1st big alarm of the morning serves the same purpose....especially on the rare occasion i have a drink....
