VW VDO guages advice

  1. I have been thinking of fitting a couple or 3 VDO gauges into my Milly.
I've been thinking of a Volt Meter, an Oil Pressure gauge & an oil Temp Gauge.
My question is what is the max oil temp on a healthy VW engine?
Also am I right in saying that I may as well get a 0-5Bar Gauge cos it will never get any higher?
    :)

  2. Can't help with your questions, sorry. But have you thought about were you're going to put them? Personally, when I had mine done, the only place for me was right under the stereo hole, three of them. But the space was just a little too tight. To fix that involved cutting above the stereo hole and raising it a little and welding a new piece in below to house the gauges. I then had the whole dash covered in vinyl and the end-result looked very nice (don't ask me for pics as I'm rubbish at that sort of stuff).

  4. What tricky said. I'd honestly advise you skip the gauges and relax. The VDO voltmeter is hideously inaccurate and you really don't want to know what your oil pressure is when the engine's hot :(.

Temp gauge if you must, but it'll only worry you.

i managed to get three vdo gauges into a friends dash without cutting the radio hole, i also fitted a new engine from laurie pettit and after burning the cam left it to idle and the oil light came on and the vdo gauge read around half a bar ( the oil light and gauge sender are an all in one vdo unit too) i was a little concerned to say the least as the engine was brand new, after much checking and worrying etc it turned out the oil gauge plus sender were reading way way way out, the gauge was showing around 2bar 30 psi below the actual reading  . i checked it agains a mechanical gauge, the volt meter seems about right though. Worry gauges no need to have um

  9. Your probably right but it gives more stuff to look at on the dash :)

  18. I have just a VDO oil temp gauge fitted just to the right of the steering columb . Massive debate on where or what sender you use ( i went porsche taco route) but i just use it as a guide . I don`t like the look of the 3 gauge pods .

  19. Just to butt in here, what size/type of rev counter would I require? I'm not paying the silly money heritage and the like are asking

  20. I wouldn't want extra gauges stuck all over the place so I'm not a fan of those pod type setups.
For a voltmeter I have one that plugs in the cigarette lighter socket the standard one under the stereo is on the starter battery, I also have some extra sockets in the glovebox connected to the leisure battery and I mainly use the voltmeter to monitor the state of the LB while camping, but also too check the charging system and voltage of the starter battery. Theres loads of these voltmeters on ebay really cheap.
I am thinking about getting a dual temperature and oil pressure gauge and putting it where the clock would go in the dash, its a matter of finding one that is the right size and looks OK next to the the standard speedo and dials. I wondered if a porsche one would fit and the senders are installable on a t2
