  1. Which it does. Ever been on the Newbury Bypass (just as a random example)? Hated by the greens as it was going to ruin the countryside, now a really nice drive past Newbury rather than straight through town. It used to be a nightmare for drivers and residents, now it's fine.

And why is everyone driving around in diesel cars? Yes, because the greens said we were all going to die of global warming and CO2 emissions had to be cut at all costs. People bought into this and thought they were doing the right thing and Governments encouraged them to do so financially with CO2 based tax bands that ignored other pollutants.

You can stick nuclear in the same category as all other renewables at the moment - they are simply not competitive and need subsidy. The Government (this one and the previous one) are agreeing the subsidies on our behalf, which we are paying for in our bills. If you don't want fossil fuel power stations and you want the lights to stay on when it's not either sunny or windy, what exactly do you suggest for green power generation with technology that's available now?

Tidal energy. Dependable and predictable for the next four billion years or so.

  4. Don't the greens object to that too, on the grounds of damage to the environment, or nature, or fish or something? That's the problem, they don't want to find solutions to make our lives better, they want us to simply use less of everything and go back to the dark ages.

Which is quite sensible taken without the details? I could say the consumerist nature of my own household was 80% due to the ex, since she left our bin liner count is down to about 20% of what it was.

  6. Don't take it personally. We'd miss you.

It's scientists that say we need to cut CO2 emissions, not just "the greens". According to NASA, for example: "ninety-seven percent of climate scientists agree that climate-warming trends over the past century are very likely due to human activities, and most of the leading scientific organizations worldwide have issued public statements endorsing this position."

You could put them in the same category, except that a faulty windmill is unlikely to result in a massive environmental catastrophe. The Chernobyl disaster resulted in the development and dispersal of a radioactive cloud which spread as far as the UK.

And we're subsidising nuclear power through our taxes, not our bills.

  7. This is back to the earlier point of industrialisation and china, no body wants to forbid rising living standards for the rest of the world, but if it follows the pattern set by us in the West, the whole world will be fubared.
It only works (just!) at this time, because most of the world lives on a bowl of rice a day and the energy from a candle.
We should be showing that it can be done differently.

  8. I'm not arguing for nuclear, just pointing out that all of the alternatives to fossil fuels require subsidies.

  9. Fair enough. The point is that the mainstream political parties are backing nuclear, despite the fact that it's not likely to be any more cost effective than clean renewables. On top of this are the potential dangers and the as yet unsolved problem of dealing with the waste. Additionally, nuclear plants rarely match their claimed output and often have to be shut down for extended periods of time. All nuclear plants have a lifespan, and when that is reached, decommissioning costs tax payers a fortune - a huge problem for future generations. The reason that they're backing nuclear? As far as I can tell it's the usual - big business having it's influence, the government lining the pockets of the likes of EDF and maybe taking a little drink themselves...

I thought that was ISIS? Or are the Greens and ISIS one n the same? Actually, would like to know what Greens view on security is? Wonder if they'd take the view like CAGE that the likes of Mohammed Emwazi and Michael Adebalago were radicalized by the nasty people at MI5 who upset them by asking them some questions, the poor lambs....

  11. Because nuclear power stations are probably easier to build than stuff like big tidal projects, because of all of the green objections to those.
