Various bits and bobs on the side

  1. Yes, I have a penchant for feeling sorry for tat other people is selling, resulting in this, er... collection.

    1. 1998 MGF VVC.

My Grandad worked all his life for the once mighty british car empire that eventually threw up MG/Rover then unceremoniously carked it, and the whole family drove some of the finest they could offer. I was bought up on Metros, Montegos and when us kids grew up it was time to drive all the hand-me-downs. I remember fondly in my early 20's convincing girls how cool my 825 SD was with it's plush velour interior, of course they were having none of it. But the one thing we all aspired to was an MGF, so many years later when my mate was selling a VVC as a bit of a basket case for 700 quid I jumped at it. The idea was to throw another 700 at it and have it on the road. Ha! In the last 2 years it has had most of the suspension, brakes and engine ancillaries replaced. I guess i'm just a sucker for the terminally unroadworthy. But there you go.

    2. 2001 Ford Focus Kombi

A few years ago I was after a cheap winter car (trying to fit in as a traditional german) as the BMW I was running would have needed winter tyres. At the same time my colleague was trying to work out what to do with his focus. The conversation went something like:

Him: Want to buy a car for 50 euros?
    Me: What's wrong with it?
Him: It's only running on 3 cylinders and someone's crashed into the side of it
Me: Does it have winter tyres?
    Him: Er, yes.
    Me: Sold!

A 25 euro set of HT leads, a new door and wing later and it's still going strong with 288,000km on the clock... best thing I ever bought, well campervan aside.....

    3. 2005 Susuki SV 650

Facing ridicule from everyone for the number of "cars" I owned (despite the protests the Camper is NOT a car) but feeling the itch for some more worn out metal, I picked up this little number for 800 quid off a mate. The catch? 120,000km on the clock. I haven't found many bikes with many more on there... not sure why but I see these things as a challenge? Anyway seems alright, nothing's gone wrong yet!

So there you go. I have an addiction for ropey vehicles. At least I'm in good company, my mate down the road just bought a project delorean.....
