Appreciate its a bay forum etc etc - but thought I'd share something I've learnt (the hard way) recently.

If you own a car with the VAG based 2 litre Tdi engine (pretty sure its the same lump in Audi A3, A4, A6, TT, Audi Offroaders, some Golf's, Passat, some Skoda and some Seat I think) there is a factory recall that for some reason VAG aren't publicly releasing.

They are only fixing the fault (its something on the Diesel injectors/loom) when car's come in with the issue.

Mine happened on the M4 in the middle lane - engine stops, lose all power and won't start - no warning. It happens typically on acceleration - which is fantastic on those overtaking manoeuvres.

I'd urge you to phone the nearest VAG garage and get them to check if your's has a recall.

I think it effects cars between 2004 and 2010 and the 170bhp model (though don't take this as gospel).

They will change the injectors for free - personally I think I'd want to avoid finding out the hard way as I did.

As a footnote - my car runs far smoother now and the MPG has soared - probably 10 to 15% up on what was a disappointing MPG figure.

heard this before, i think its all the injectors plus the wiring loom that feeds them, they try to carry out the work when the cars are in for their first service, as its not considered a dangerous fault ( brakes steering etc) then there doesnt seem to be much in the papers about it

  3. Are you sure this is just for the 2 litre engine? My 'everyday' VW has got the 2.5 TDI and a couple of weeks ago I had a strange loss of power for a while. It seems to have fixed itself now, but I wouldn't be surprised if it happens again. When I suffered the loss of power I thought 'gosh, I hope this isn't my injectors playing up'. I thought that because I've heard of a lot of folk having such problems with their VDubs in the past. I'd be up to VW like a shot if mine, the 2.5, were included.

  4. Don't know why you are saying they are hiding it.
They sent letters out to most owners.
It's all over the vag fourms, I got my passat 2.0 (140) injectors and look replaced around January and they where fully booked.

  5. Our mitsubishi grandis 2005 has a vag 2.0 tdi engine in it, any speculation on if that might be affected?
We had a big loss of power about a year ago, got it serviced by an independent so he didnt touch the injectors, power returned after the service and the assumption was that the new air filter was responsible.

Agree, its on many forums, but read entries older than December 2011 and you'll see it was denied by Audi for a long time and only fessed up after VOSA intervention - for example:

    http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?127367-Injector-recall-yes-this-is-really-happening-at-last!!

I never received a letter - I did receive a letter in 2004 for my 1987 VW Golf needing a factory recall due to heater matrix exploding and needing to be replaced, so they can do them.

Maybe VW are better with the recall than Audi?!

As for not dangerous - I think loosing all power - including power assisted steering, brake servo and acceleration is pretty dangerous - I was in the middle lane of a busy motorway.

If honest - would have been a bit miffed that Audi didn't sort this out in 2009 when it first appeared had I been looking down from heaven as me and my family had been killed in a perfectly avoidable crash.

  8. I just popped Into Vw and they checked it by the reg number, told them everything.

  9. The 2 litre is not well regarded in the trade compared to the previous 1.9 litre PD unit. I was in Lincoln VW specialists yesterday for an MoT and they were explaining a turbo overboost fault to a customer, also apparently a common fault, £1,400 fix for a new turbo.
