Ellie Goulding’s (pretty much) carbon karaoke copy of Joni’s original River is at number one in the charts
I totally agree! "Merry Xmas Everybody" is a song by the British rock band Slade, released as a non-album single in 1973. The song was written by lead vocalist Noddy Holder and bassist Jim Lea, and produced by Chas Chandler.
Anyone can do any song, it doesn't bother me, but do something different with it, make it your own....but to basically copy the original wholesale, the vocal, the arrangement, everything, makes me cross frankly. Talk about standing on the shoulders of giants
Herbert von Karajan was a fraud, Luciano Pavarotti .. all cover versions I believe.. People will buy what is promoted to them.
I didn't say there was anything wrong in cover versions and the classical orchestral world works by different parameters than the pop world does. I agree people will buy what is promoted even if, imo, it has zero artistic merit other than to remind you how brilliant the original was
Just listened to both....Ellie's version much clearer and tuneful. Nostalgia...it isn't what it used to be!
I was checking out the headlines, as you do, on the Beeb website, and came across it, I wasn’t checking the charts as such as that is filled with young people’s music. It’s all Somebody Or Other (feat) Somebody Or Other, and I just can’t be doing with it
