Using the Propex

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Sir Arthur, Nov 20, 2013.

  1. This has been like this all year so thought I'd see if anyone else had the same issue.

When turning on the HS2000, if I set it to be hot from the get go (i.e. switch pressed to the left) it will not come on. All I get is three orange flashes (which means low voltage according to the manual). However if I set it to the right (infinity symbol; the cold air blower) the fans starts up and generally after 30 seconds I can switch it to hot and the thing sparks into life. However sometimes it will just die when going from right to left.

Now I've explored the idea that I indeed have low voltage, but I did this last week from a freshly installed fully-charged battery and got the same result.

It's not the most annoying thing in my life, but it's not exactly pleasing. Anyone else have to take a two-switch approach?

  2. Mines abit like that, temperamental bugger!

  3. Buy an Eberspacher!

It might be that you need a new thermostat. Contact Propex and ask them for advice.

    And check your earthing.

you may have a poor connection or you may need a bigger wire feeding it
Try measuring the voltage at the heater when its running

  6. I'm sure if u contacted propex u would find them most helpfully. I always have!

  7. Its most likely an issue with your wiring elsewhere. Do you have a new and dedicated feed from the fuse box which is not reliant on any of the old wiring? I had similar issues when I installed mine years ago, when I had a dedicated feed and fuse box straight from the battery the problem went away.

Did you happen to have a thermostat with that?my heater?

  9. the cut out sensor is quite touchy on the older units, but the newer units are supposed to be more predictable..... it sounds more like what Matty and others have posted...it doesn't take much resistance in a length of skinny wire to make it marginal.

  10. Try reset button in the beast. Take off cover and its a small red thing.

  11. Thanks all. It may well be a battery issue as my lezzy has just failed a week after a full charge. Time to dip into the savings again.

  12. Brand new battery went in today. Still need to flick right before flicking left, but only for a couple of seconds. Funnily enough the installer suggested I always turn it on that way. Well as long as it works.

To answer a couple of questions - it has it's own fused circuit direct from the battery, so it's not sharing wiring. The thermostat was rather unhelpfully installed in a cupboard originally. Yes IN A CUPBOARD. What you gonna do eh? I was travelling the day after collection so didn't really get the chance to ask him to move it and then I kinda drifted away from using that guy. I remounted it outside the cupboard myself in the summer (some of you might remember me blowing the fuse while doing so) but the cable remaining would only stretch to just outside, so it was still at the back of the bus. So a few months ago I sourced a five core cable and moved the controls to the B pillar, allowing driver, passenger and camping access. I had to disconnect the box and splice in the new cable. However the individual wires were thicker than those originally fitted. This meant taking a Dremel to the circuit board to make the hole bigger and allow the wires to feed in. So I have obviously increased the resistance in the circuit by having thicker wires. BUT the right/left issue was occurring before the rewire, so who knows what's the matter?
