under dash electrics and a 3 yr old

  1. Hi

I went camping this week end with my 3 yr old and all she did was try and pull wires out from under the dash. I bodged a solution with some thin card but is there a more perminant solution, and Im not re wiring the van.

    Cheers

  2. you could try the velcro cable ties to pull the cables up and connect them to something else out of sight - for the cables that are bunched you could try those cable tidies that you get for TV/DVD cables but that won't sort out all of them. The only other thing would be a thin sheet of perspex fitted above the kick board - she will be able to see them but wont be able to touch.

  3. try gaffer tape on the 3 yr old

  4. that was my other solution........

    Joke by the way

  6. Fit an underdash tray...useful, but very awkward to get at the cabling except by removing it first.

yes, of course it is, wink, wink.

  8. If you've got a mains hookup, re-route the wiring under the dash... :)

I like this idea, but the wife says no. So i might go for the perspex idea

I'd be worried about using that much gaffer tape ........

might take some paint with it when you take it off

  14. If its only when camping it happens then a roll of clingfilm (saran wrap for our usa members) will provide a suitable barrier if you build up a few layers

  15. Thats over the dash bottom and electrics not your kid

Teach the three year old about electrics and then you can get them to climb under the dash to fix the wiring in future.

However a vdub with a light saber that comes on when the oil pressure is low or a stereo that says " to infinity and beyond " every time you start might become bit jarring. And the fluffy fairy lights on the gearstick might not be your style.

  18. if you are dead serious about doing it, there are two options, one is the budget option, make a template, transfer to some ply and fit, or you could get some laser cut aluminium to match the template for a bit more quality look. or perspex is cool too. But if it was my 3 yr old, and this isnt preaching, after the first time they would have learned their lesson and have a new handprint on their leg.
