I currently have 185/55R14 tyres fitted. My camper is all over the place. Should I change to 185/80R14 ? Thanks John
If they are car rather than commercial van tyres then that may be a part of it. I used to hate some Yokohamas that the PO had fitted but found that other brands were stiffer.. Usually though you need to go thoroughly through the steering as there are a lot of wear points that need to be checked and if necessary parts replaced. There is a difference between the wind just firmly pushing it so it tends to go off track, and the loose steering where a gust requires that you yank the steering hard as the bus steers itself off in a different direction. If you can hear any clunks or you can move the steering wheel with little effort around the straight ahead position (wheels on ground)more than a few millimetres it's worth checking.
What's the load rating? I fitted some car type tyres on mine just to check size and it was like driving on jelly.
What they said. Car tyres are proper nasty on a bay. My early was transformed by putting proper tyres on it. Obviously you need to get the camber and toe in set properly as well. If it’s been lowered, chances are it will be out.
If you have handling issues, what condition is the following in: steering box adjustment Steering idler pin play Track rod ends Ball joints As others have suggested other pointers too.
As said previously , basics first , check the steering system FULLY and if you can't do it find someone who can . Coupling, adjustment , wear , tracking etc etc etc ....could be one of many problems causing the issue and if it's lowered that's a different can of worms .... A well set up stock van on half decent tyres isn't bad to be honest Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk
Hello John, the /80 is ok but not the original tire height in % - that was standard /82 and typical not placed in the definition so only 185 R 14 I use Continental Vanco 2 185 R14 C 102/100 Q today.
Did a quick search, max load rating I can find for any 185/55 14 is 80 which is way too low for a bay take a look at the vin sticker if it’s still there - it’ll tell you the axle load rating max figures. The tyres you fit need to exceed that rating. On my bus that equates to min 85 load rating for the front and 93 for the back. I actually run tyres that are 87 front and 96 rear.
