Tyre Load Ratings

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by sharpey, Feb 28, 2013.

  1. Would '97' load rated tyres be sufficient for a Westie, I'm reading threads saying that they should be in excess of '100'.

Anybody have experience with '97's as there is a bigger selection and slightly cheaper?

  2. It's not just the load rating - 8 ply commercial tyres are what it should have really. You'll find it drives better with them on too. Insurance companies can get a bit iffy if you use the wrong tyres too.

  3. does anyone know if when the tyre says 580 kg are they ok for the wieght of the bus, as 4 of those equal to over 2 tonne?

    Thanks

  4. I bought four Avon van tyres today for £240 fitted 185 r14c which I think is pretty good value and 102 rated. I have been driving around on 92 rated ones but I understand they are a bit soft for a heavy old Westy. the other benefit of van tyres is tough sidewalls so they ought to take more of a bashing than normal car tyres.

Depending on the model a Bay could have a gross weight of 2300kgs; gross front axle 1010kgs, rear 1300kgs (yes, I know that doesn’t total 2300kgs), a tyre rated at 580kgs would be okay on the front but not the rear. 580kgs is a load index 89, 97 is 730kgs, 100 is 800kgs. 97 load index is fine for a Westy, or any other Bay for that matter, it doesn’t have to be a commercial tyre or 8 ply but it is a van and will handle better with a tyre with stiff sidewalls i.e. commercial or reinforced.
