type 4 to type 1 converting

  1. I have cooked my type 4 engine and have not got the funds to rebuilt it at the moment. So I was thinking about sticking in a type 1. I know that the type 4 is the better engine. But I don't often go more than 25 miles away from home in the Bay because the missus has a T25 diesel that we use on long trips.
Just need to get the bay back on the road so I was thinking that the t1 would be the cheapest option.
What's involved? And does anyone have the parts required that I could buy?

The input shaft on your gearbox will be too long but can be changed.
You'll need pretty much a turnkey engine , nothing much interchangeable,
    Starter motor should be ok
    Foam seal is the same

  3. Have fun sourcing all the tin ware, I have no idea about the other bits like heat exchangers, exhaust, other ancillaries, you might find it rather painful and more expensive than you first thought

You might be able to find a T1 engine mostly complete with tinware and heat exhangers to drop in. But if not the tinware and heat exchangers etc could easily add hundreds of pounds depending on how old and decrepit they are

But it is probably cheaper to fix the T4 and cut costs by delivering a box of bits to the engine builder or just learn to DIY the repair.

Or just hand the heads to a rebuilder if that is what is toasted.
