Type 4 oil cooler

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by 62 deluxe, Nov 28, 2020.

  1. While my engine is out for clutch replacement I decided to repaint all the tin etc. Took the bracket off the oil cooler and there is corrosion on the edges. It’s genuine cooler and doesn’t leak but should I just replace it? What are the quality of repros like?
    Cheers

  2. I think I've thrown them away but I had a couple of spares I would have given you. Maybe someone else has one lying around? They can't be worth much, maybe just postage and a drink? Come on people.

While that's fine on the face of it, many people including me would not fit a used cooler from an unknown source. One never knows for sure what may come out of it after some hot running no matter how carefully it's flushed through.

The new ones are a little bit bigger here and there making them a slight PITA to fit. The first one i fitted to my engine leaked and as you (OP) know they're not a ten minute job to replace.

  4. No exactly, so while it’s all out I may as well do it. I’m fairly certain the corrosion will continue and last thing I want is to have to replace it again when the engine is back in.

That^ has definitely seen better days.

New ones might need a bit of fettling. VW on left Brink on the right; the red area needed to be removed to allow the support bracket to fit.

  6. Ours have had oil of unknown origin on them, so replaced anyway but as said, if it's on it's way out , for the cost and not knowing what might be in it, replace.. but as Westy says, new need a fettle to get the bracket on

I'm swapping mine for a new one. While the engine is in bits it seems a false economy not to. Now if only the PlusGas would penetrate that second bracket bolt...

  9. Yes my lower screw headed bolt was a bugger to get off, undid the top one, managed to get the bracket off and then put the bracket in the vice and got the screw out with vice grips

  12. I kept my old one. I guess repros or ok, but I'm aware of the issue fitting them. A friend of mine out mine through his ultrasonic cleaner. Lots of tarballs came out.

I would reuse if rebuilding my own engine for normal wear and tear. The worry buying used is you don't know if the engine it came from self destructed filling the cooler with shrapnel.

62 Deluxe ,valid point by zedders, but the used 1 I have for sale didn't come off an exploded engine. And its had a good clean out by me which resulted in no metal objects exiting from the oil ports.
