Do type 4 engine use a lot of oil ? No major leaks and doesn't smoke but I'm having to top up every 200 miles or so . Goes from max to below minimum .
My 2 litre uses virtually none, only rarely needing a small top up between changes. From max to minimum is a litre, using that much in 200 miles points to a major leak I would say. Check the oil pressure switch, it's tucked away a bit and can be a bit awkward to see if it's leaking. If it's burning that much I'd imagine it would be smoking pretty heavily.
You want to go down a steep hill , preferably long keep it in 3rd or 2nd gear foot off the accelerator , When you get to the bottom of the hill when you require power ...throttle it down hard ....look out the back window and look for blue smoke . If it does then it's your liners and rings . If you say it's using that much oil and it is not leaking ....i will be very surprised if you don't see any smoke .
I bet it's leaking more than you realise. Mine used to do that but with the flywheel seal gone. Leaked a fair bit when the dipstick seal went too. Now (touch wood) it hardly uses any at all between changes
I just did 1400 miles with type 4 and put a squirt in- probably out of worry than need. Check your rocker covers and underneath as sounds like you have a big leak if it is not smoking.
My 2Lit Type 4 was doing that. Didn't see any oil splashes on the drive either, however on closer inspection I had leaks on the push rod tube seals and the dip stick seal. Check m all closely I'd be surprised if you had no leaks at all Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
This is one more thing for me to try. It's not obviously smoky on a normal run, and it doesn't drip on the garage floor, yet my oil consumption is only about 600 miles per litre. Compression is good though, all around 130.
