Type 4 mpg

  1. fuel consumption is of course a subjective topic. Ive been doing a somewhat inneficient exercise in seeing what im getting at the mo as it seemed a bit thirsty.

Fill up to fill up, and thats on the pump clicking off rather than the gauge saying full as it never quite does anyway I got around 17..... Gasp!

Standard 2 litre with 40 dells and 28 chokes in there! Ive purposely driven it without regard to consumption. Its started regularly when im not using it so thats zero miles each time. Done a good bit of town driving but mostly motorways, normally at about the speed limit but sometimes squeezing a bit more (honest guv).

Anyway, its running rich id guess as the tailpipes are sooty. Im not running a pressure regulator on the mechanical pump so possibly overfuelling?

Anyway before i get into rejetting etc im wondering whether im peeing in the wind without the regulator.

Engines in a good state of tune with even compression last i checked around the 130 mark if i recall. Timings probably good as timed it last techenders (electronic)

Anyway. Probably only a few have an even similar set up but id be interested on opinions and views. I dont expect fantastic consumption but the next test needs to be a sensible long run at a bit lower a speed and with fuel consupmtion in mind to see what the best is i could get. Hoping to achieve low 20s.

Sounds pretty poop mpg but i dont expect great things, dont hang araound always ready to camp and dont do a great deal of miles tbh! And no..... I dont want change to a T4,5,6 or a bongo just for better mpg just yet, a scoobie would be nice but the payback is too long and im kinda happy with the motor just now (apart from oil leaks).

What do you reckon @zedders . Carbs ok but engine too small ...lol.

I get 20mpg. I think there's scope for improvement. You should get more but around town 17 is probably quite good!

  3. I got 22mpg from my 1915cc with 40mm carbs with all the Shiite on the roof, take that off and it was nearly 25!
The 2065 gets 21mpg if I drive normally, 23 if I drive like my gran and 15 if I drive like I stole it.
These are proper "measured" mpg's not the "guessed" stuff from the "I don't know what I'm doing" brigade.

  4. With the 1911 and twin Webers I got over 23 on a long run fully loaded, 18 bimbling about in Cornwall on the lanes / steep hills.

The EFI isn't fully set up yet, but I'm hoping for much better as the AFR and ignition can be set up for economy at cruising revs / fuel load.

  5. You should get a type 1 in it.

1776cc type 1 motor - I get 40 mpg and never had a Subaru engines bay overtake me.

(40mpg may be 'cos I got silly little tyres on the front and they make the speedo/mile reader read all wrong)

  6. Where to start! I know its all incremental and difficult to tell and im not after a majic bullet but im interested in the regulator aspect. All jets are on the higside although ive lost track of whats in there but i didnt go small so possibly 137 mains and 58 idles.

    Rolling road?

  8. In retrospect i wasnt impressed last time . Didnt change any jetting at all. I guessed on set up as you know, im not that good! It did run better after. So theres some sirt of black art at play!

  9. Thats useful. I shall go for the gran approach and see what i get! I may also see what apps are available. Just cos my audometer says a number it doesnt mean its right!

  10. Will pass on that for now. How small are your fronts ffs!

  11. 17 mpg is plenty. Drive it fast and enjoy it

  12. Fit a lambda sensor in the exhaust and an AFR gauge on the dash and set it up yourself.

  13. Could you elaborate on this a bit, sounds interesting. There's wide and narrow band lambda 's which one did you use? I'm guessing wide.

And what about the gauge that goes with it. Thanks

It's a good exercise to occasionally monitor fuel consumption anyway @Dicky . As you know, we do ours religiously & it's intresting that over time you can see the engine approaching tune-up time as the consumption increases.

  15. I got my MPG dow to 15 once ... blowing heat exchanger and driving round Dartmoor ... seems to scrape a little above 20 on average.

I got 12 out of my bay towing a trailer round Wales 2litre auto.
I'll stick with my builders van now! (35 ave 40 best)

  17. Fast run, A11 - A14 to North Norfolk 110 miles, engine very hot, 25 MPG

Slow run A10 to North Norfolk, 105 miles, engine cool, 25 MPG.

Wild camping both times so not loaded with anything much. I wasn't very happy with the mpg but perhaps I'm expecting too much! :D

^That’s where you’re wasting most fuel and causing most damage to the engine – if you don’t use it don’t start it.

He's right donchaknow. I don't start mine unless I'm off somewhere. Why keep starting it? Excuse to nip out for a spliffy?
