I had a colleague asking me yesterday about aircooled vw engines for a light aircraft he's built. He said he needs an engine with modified heads for 2 spark plugs (so I guess like Alfa twinspark?) and to run at around 110hp easily and reliably. Does anyone know who builds these or could make that kind of modification?
There's an old fella lives next door to my boss. He's an old light aircraft pilot. I met him a couple of weeks ago and he said he has lots of vw engine bits that were used in his planes. I bet he has what your after. He said he has a few heads, but they sounded like lawnmower ones so I didn't show much interest. Edit. I'll have a look in on him soon to see what he has. It could be an aladdins cave and I had forgotten all about it. He even said to come round and help myself!
I remember few years ago VW Heritage had some Type 4 engine which were x military and been used for generators or something like that, think they run 24 volt though so you needed few items to convert them.
I used to know an old fellow who used to convert vw engines for use in aircraft. He swore by the 1500 type 1. Claimed it was the best engine ever built.... *****
^these folk seem to have most experience. Have a browse through the late Bob Hoover's blog. He was the guru on VW engines (usually type 4s) in aircraft. Well worth a read anyway...he wrote really interesting suff. http://bobhooversblog.blogspot.co.uk They usually stick with one plug per cylinder tho', rather than two for safety. Ideally, you'd need two plugs and two magnetos, rather than car-style ignition.
This is what the VW aircooled engine mutated into for aircraft .... http://www.flyrotax.com/enginesImpr...dImpressum/912-80hpImpressum/description.aspx
