Type 4 into a bus that was type 1

  1. What’s needed to fit a type 4 engine into a bus that was originally type 1 engined with a 3 rib box?

Longer input shaft, as long as it's got the post 75 bellhousing the box is fine.
A type4 engine with all tinware and auxiliaries.

  4. How do I tell if my gearbox is post 75?
I take it the loom will need adapting
Are the heating pipes from the exchangers different
Will the air filter stand have to be chopped out?

Try the code, think it only matters if you're putting a 228mm clutch in.
    Minor adaptations to the wiring,
    No
Only if it's having twin carbs.

  6. If youve got a sniff at a motor then go for it. You wont look back. Ive never gone type 1 to type 4 but any loom mods wont be too difficult from what i know. As others have said about input shaft but there again i havent done it. Heater pipes are same. Stand will most likely have to go i would think.......

Edit. Go with the flakester on the stand issue,

You will need an external voltage regulator (firewall mounted) and the associated wiring loom, with plugs.

Air filter stand may be okay for carbs such as 34 ICT’s.

You will need the dome bits that go on the heat riser tubes to the concertina joints.

Snail fan and the two pipes that connect to the risers off the heat exchangers.

We did the type 1 to type 4 conversion on Gusbus inc 6 rib box, was a doddle really.

  8. What are the type four heads that it’s difficult to get heat exchangers and exhaust for?

It’s the US/California triangular flange ones which are difficult to source parts for.

The Euro ones are readily available for oval and square port heads.

I’m gonna switch Majors from the triangular Cali spec system to Euro soon

  10. Is the starter motor different

  11. Starter motor relates to the bellhousing, not the engine type.
