afternoon I have bought a cj engine from a pal to fit into my '72 bay running a later style bell housing 1600 box. The motor has had all the tinware sorted and my pal has come to bolt the flywheel up and I thought I had best ask here first..... What flywheel will I need to make sure it is suitable for my gearbox? Also, what clutch? I know there are different sized flywheels for the 1700-2000 but would hate to get it wrong for the wallet impact lol
Check out this thread from few days ago... Few pointers there.. Can't get link to work on my phone! Sent from my Hudl 2 using Tapatalk
Measure the diameter of the clutch face of your flywheel, that's the bit that you need to get the clutch to fit in. It'll either be 228mm or 210mm. I think it'll be 228mm unless someone's messed about and changed the flywheel already. Oh, you might know already but you'll need to fit a pilot bearing into the flywheel as the input shaft on a 3 rib gearbox is too short and won't be supported if you don't.
Get a clutch for your flyweel. If it came with your engine it should be 228mm, that's the best as it's biggest. Next down is 215 then 210 so should obvious.
I'll ,ensure what's with the engine but it's the modification what's got me sweating as I was hoping for a straight bolt in. I need to get the gearbox code I guess?
Ok quick update...... Got this flywheel from my pals.... So, which clutch kit do I need to order as type 4 is all new to me
that looks like a 215mm flywheel assuming the other end of the tape is measuring the clutch plate recess
Inner edge of the opposite side so yeah,215 mm sounds about right for which clutch and plate to order?
You then need a needle roller bearing fitting in the centre of the flywheel. Cost me £10 to have the local machine shop do it. Could probably do it yourself if you've got a pillar drill. The bearing was about £2 off eBay. I'll try and find the sizes.
This is what you need to end up with: http://www.germansupply.com/home/customer/product.php?productid=17427&cat=372
Here you go https://vwheritage.mobi/GB/productDetails.cfm?iItemID=160994 Someone might be able to get you the dimensions as they are much cheaper from a generic bearing suppliers
