Type 4 heater blower fuse rating

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by grub, Apr 26, 2022.

  1. Hi all
Could someone please tell me the fuse rating for the blower motor on the type 4, that fits in the fuse holder by the fan.
    Thx.

  7. You may be right but I looked it up and it said 16. Will check ad swap as needs be as if you calc it at21 watts it’s only 4. Whatever amps running.

  8. I’d probably misread this:

  9. Book is odd. As you say, it’s only powering 2 x 21 watt-ers, so 8A will do nicely.

Not wishing to be controversial, but according to the marvellous colour wiring book from @Bigherb, Fuse 18 should be 8A. The wire down stream is 1.5mm2. When fiddling with mine recently I found it had a 16A one, so I swapped it for 8A - what can I say, it works ok!

  11. Tbh I didn’t really pay a great deal of attention as it was more about connecting up the fan amongst a multitude of jobs. Not a major job though is it. Will get done! Is “what fuse” the new “which oil”??

Possibly. New torpedo, bullet, 'European', whatever they are called bewilderingly can be listed as ceramic but are actually plastic!

"Please note whilst we call them ceramic they are not"..!!! Really..

Anyway, anyone got a source for 20mm ceramic ones? Most seem to be 25, including the ones from Classic VW.
Part number N01-712-11, which is the same part Heritage list from Autolamps, whoever they are. Are the Heritage one 20 or 25..they don't say!

It's confusing. I'm not happy with the 25mm ones in the fuse holder. They a a bit big IMO...

    Actually...does it really matter? @Bigherb help o_O:thumbsup:

Not now, but I saw plenty actual ceramic ones when I first got into these things 25 years ago.

  14. All of my fuses are the plastic-bodied torpedo type, and they're just fine. I'd suggest that if a fuse is getting hot enough to melt the body, it would be worth investigating why, before your wiring loom burns out. Hot fuse = not normal.

  15. If in doubt use a twisted bit of foil from Malboro fag packet.....mine are plastic bodied torpedo as well never had problems, been in there 15 yearsish.

Nah, they aren't getting hot, just old. And being me, I just like the idea of ceramic Vs plastic.
To he honest I'll live with thermoplastic but it's the length I'd like to try and reduce back down to 20mm.:)

  17. Surely all torpedos are 25mm long, or they’d rattle around in the fusebox?

Maybe. The ones that came out were 20, so maybe not!
The replacements seem to overstretch the contacts. Possibly someone had previously closed them up and because I've not paid any attention to it in the past I just haven't noticed!
Maybe I just need to go and get a life...

  19. I think we both do ;)

Need that springiness to make good contact.

Are you measuring from point to point? I've got a bunch of fuses here which I don't use anymore as I've converted both the bus and buggy to modern stuff, Ill bring 'em to TE for you. I think two are ceramic.
