Type 4 Heat Exchanger Question - Missing Part

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Owen Snell, Jul 13, 2013.

  1. Blatantly stealing pictures from a thread by matt. My heat exchangers are not properly secured at the rear where they mount to the fan shroud.

On this picture, you can see the small piece of tin that sits on top of the exchanger and clamps it to the shroud. This is missing on both sides on my exchangers. What is this part called / part number / link to a supplier please?

  4. They are a rubbish fit as I bought both and they don't seal properly. Probably modifiable if the engine is out. Mine wasn't and they didn't seal that well. I am going to fab replacements next time my engine is out as they are not that complicated.

They have rubber or cork gaskets to make them fit nice

  6. that would explain it. those didn't come with the cover plates when I ordered the ones I used

  7. They are thick cork gaskets that squash down to take up the complicated profile. They should seal well. I bought gaskets from JK and they were fine.
The covers are slightly different on each side and only fit one way round. Bit of trial and error needed.

  8. I use heat res silcone from screwfix!

  9. to seal em that is.

  10. Can you point me to these please, I can't find them on JK?

  11. I have a similar problem in that the RHS cover plate is missing from my Californian triangular flange heat exchanger. I've also read a thread on thesamba that says the gaskets are no longer available, but you can make your own.

Also, does part no. 021256322B fit all type 4 heat exchangers?

  12. top work Lydart. I reckon a cork floor tile and a Stanley knife and that's the gaskets made.

  13. Great reference page!

  14. Finally got these fitted this morning and there's a lot less rattling going on around the engine with the exchangers secured properly!

  15. It's worth keeping a note of that supplier. I got my gasket sheet from a marine supplier as no- one else had any stock. I got the gaskets you mention here from JK as part of an engine overhaul pack and they work just fine too.
