I have bought a Victor Reinz gasket set for my 2L rebuild - set 01-23455-04 (or part number 071-198-009/A

My engine had a sump extension when we bought it, which I've now removed. I'm trying to piece the original parts together

The only list I can find of the individual gaskets, seals and washers in the set is on the Ratwell site https://ratwell.com/technical/GasketSet.html

I'm struggling to identify the washer that goes on the oil strainer nut. This is about the only one that fits on the nut - which I think is part N on the ratwell diagram. It is a copper crush washer with an internal diameter of about 14mm. Is that right, 'cos it seems a very sloppy fit on the nut?

It's part 30 on page 25 of the engine and clutch section in the Bentley manual. Not the best view, and difficult to tell if it's a crush washer or not

Or is it the aluminium crush washer, that fits a lot better?

Yes^, it’s the oil strainer crush washer, part M on Ratwells diagram, 12mm x 18mm usually aluminium in the gasket sets. Don’t overtighten the nut.:)

    Thanks.

Yes, a smaller torque wrench is on the shopping list :)

2 of those in the kit. I assume either side of the strainer plate?

No, just on the outside. Fibre gasket, strainer, fibre gasket, cover, crush washer, nut.
The other crush washer is for the drain plug – but there are two sizes of plug so it may or may not fit.

    Sorry, next one...

The oil pump has both an O ring as well as a gasket?
The O ring stretches over the pump slightly?

Just the gasket on the outer face of the oil pump, the O-ring goes inside the pump.
You have a bolt on cam gear – make sure the oil pump studs don’t foul the cam bolts.

    Thanks. That makes more sense

The cam bolts have been machined down to give clearance

I see that but they’ll still be close, especially on that stud that sticks out slightly. But if you’ve checked the clearance that’s fine.

I bought low profile bolts, but still needed to machine them down. Luckily my father in law is handy with a lathe. I checked the clearance several times - there's not a lot, but should be plenty (2-3mm iirc). It's tricky to get the clearance while still leaving some meat on the bolt heads

2 or 3mm clearance is fine but machine the pump rather than make the cam bolts too thin. Schadek oil pumps can be very close, I check the clearance without a thrust bearing so I know even with a total thrust failure the cam isn’t going to chew into the pump. I use 1mm/0.040” as the minimum clearance.

  14. I took a few mill off the back of the cam gear wheel.. after seeing what the ends of the bolts look like when they're been kissing the pump for a bit....
