Type 4 Fuel Filter

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Ivor the Westie, Feb 2, 2016.

  1. Hi, dumb question time !

After taking Ivor out for a short run at the weekend (after a couple of weeks idle) I noticed a loss of power at the top end, particularly in 4th. Flat to the floor he was barely above 45 ☹️

So I went to check the fuel filter first of all to see if there was an obvious problem/blockage there, and I can't see one !

Is it possible that there isn't one on my engine (I believe it's a fuel injection Type 4, in case that makes a difference) ?

Here's a picture of what I'm looking at; any help would be appreciated

If there isn't a filter, what do I look at next regarding the power loss ?

that's a breather hose for the crank.

Have a look down by the left hand wheel if your fuel injected - our pump is close by it on the beam where the gearbox hanger bolts up, its easy to find!

  3. Hi Ivor, two schools of thought on this one, for a change :)

Some, like me, put the fuel filter in the engine bay; easier to see blockages replace etc. :D

Others put it under the bus near the fuel tank.

So, if it's not obvious in the engine bay look underneath near the tank outlet.

As for lack of power, 45 seems good to me

  5. As @MorkC68 showed above for T4 fuel injected, just make sure to replace it with the correct fuel filter to allow for the extra pressure in the system and the correct size hoses.

  6. Yeah, may response was for normally aspirated engines, that injection stuff is weird. :p

    and very bloody temperamental

  8. If the fuel filter is ok and not blocked check the air filter next (if its grubby change it). I use a fuel injector cleaner (goes in with the petrol via tank) every three months and makes a big difference with starting and running. Also check all the vacumme pipes are ok and not split or frayed.

Not if someone who's knows about it has a play, mine runs perfect and has for years same as everyone I've fixed :)

Ours runs spot on, but the vac hoses are a pest when they deteriorate :)

Fuel injection is also normally aspirated

In all fairness, ours had a few teething problems when the Vac hoses started to perish, but we have worked our way through them and its been faultless for four years now!

The westy sat from april through mid September, come to move him, started first time and ran brilliantly!

  15. Original engine just reinstalled the fuel injection. But as I understand it, cheapo eBay engines are the way forward!!

  16. Thanks all for the help.

I managed to find it at the weekend. Now I just need to get the rusted fuel clips off so that I can change it ! :(

Out of interest, which one do you use ?
