Type 4 Engine oil strainer query

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Craigy6, May 21, 2017.

  1. Wouldn't the gaskets need replacing anyway as soon as you remove the bolt in the middle of the plate to drain the oil? Or is there a different drain point I'm missing (and please don't say it's the mashed up hex shaped bolt!)

  2. Crikey! I definitely don't want to go there.
My friend mentioned sealant. I think I may do that as a last resort. I'll see at the weekend.
    Don't worry, it's not coming off again......ever!! :)

  3. I doubt it'll be accurate at low torque levels if it was only £30. Good torque wrenches are £150 plus and even these can struggle to keep accuracy at low levels.

Yes, it'll be the mashed up hex bolt. I had to loosen mine with a chisel, then fit a normal bolt style drain plug. You'll need one of these, plus a copper washer

The strainer bolt is not the drain plug. The drain plug is the mashed up hex shaped bolt – sorry.

  5. Thought that might be the case. Any tips on how to remove the mashed up drain plug

  6. This is what I have. They include a test certificate with handwritten results from John Li claiming +/- 4% accuracy. Probably not aircraft or nuclear power quality then. I actually got it to tighten up my CV bolts and that seems to have worked.

If it’s an Allen socket plug like this. Allen socket sump plug.jpg
I’d use a centre punch towards the edge and at an angle so it turns the plug. If it’s just a mangled male hex a smaller spanner might work, or weld a nut on it. Make sure you undo not tighten.

Personally I wouldn’t buy a sump plug from JK but being a ‘Genuine Volkswagen product’ it should be okay.

  8. Alternatively weld an Allen key into the hole. The heat will also help to get it moving.

I’m too tight to waste an Allen key.:)

Too true, I never touch mine

  11. Cheers chaps. It is the kind posted by @77 Westy. I will try those tricks.

  12. Are the plugs that fit the strainer cover and the drain plugs the same?

  13. Me neither! When we got our bus the oil looked pretty old so I changed the oil, filter and strainer. Despite the oil looking past it's best the strainer was completely clear so I put on the new one(carefully!) and I've not touched it since. Now I just change the oil and filter every year.

  14. Just checked this with JK as, although they say it's a genuine VW part they list JK as the manufacturer. When I discussed this with them they said they sourced it from UK so weren't actually sure themselves.

Think I'll go with VWH who list them as VW Original part. Cheaper too.

The bolt, actually a nut, which secures the strainer isn’t the same as the drain plug, it has a female thread.

I spent a winter rebuilding after finding mine had this done to it and the "fix" that had been used also snapped when trying to remove it.. so I'm not touching the strainer ever again... filter can do its work
