Type 3 fastback ......

  1. Hi all, been offered a 1971 type 3 1600 fastback. Thing is, I don't really know anything about them and I was hoping someone might be able to shed a bit of light on them for me? Been offered it for, well, I'll say less than £800. It's in definite need of some restoration work like new rear arches and the bulkhead under the bonnet and inner front wings, but it's a complete car, it's just been stood for around 4 1/2 years.
Don't know if iv got the time or effort to put in to it what with the bus n beetle, or if I should take a punt and just break it for parts. Not sure on what the car or parts are worth. I have a couple of pics I'll try to add in a bit.
    Hope you guys can help.
    Cheers, Karl.

i'm no expert but i would imagine you could make a profit off that even if you just bang it on e-bay.

  4. Lovely motors when restored.

Love the lines and the headlamps.

  6. Yeah, I not seen many for sale but those that are, are £5k ish.
What about the (rough) value of it as it is guys,?? That's why I'm unsure what to do? If I buy it and put it on the 'things to do' list, or buy it to break it, or just to leave alone...

  7. If you bought it and restored it would it be a keeper or one to sell ?

Thing is it's going to take a few grand isn't it ? So if you sell what will you make for all your work ? A grand ?

  9. Don't break it M8, these are getting thin on the ground, punt it on eBay as it is. I don't agree with breaking old VW's unless is unnecessary to save another rarer one. Sell as is please. ;)

Everything is expensive for Type 3; if you think your bus is expensive then think again.

What are the floor pans, sills and heater channels like? All three are very expensive.

Sourcing parts is hard and did I mention expensive?

If the sills, pans and channels are in good nick the less than £800 is a great price. If they need more than a few patches then you're looking at spending at least that amount again.

    Go for it.

  12. On my quick look round the inside, and it was quick as I was working, I only found a hole the size of a pack of cards in the battery tray, rest of floor pan seemed ok, same with the sills. Bottoms of doors seemed good too only the outer bottom skin rusting.

  14. I sold a fairly solid running and MOT'd fasty the same color as this last year for £1400.

Its very hard to say with out going over it with a screw driver but it looks a little overpriced to me.

As for breaking it I had a garage full of late fast back parts that I got sick of dragging round to auto-jumble so I ended up giving it away. I dont know if you have broken VW's before but its not as easy to move parts as people think especially late parts.

  17. Im not being negative I just know what they are worth :)

This is a good example . My good mate Stu lovingly fully restored this 73 type 3 square back (more desirable than a fasty) He has spent thousands it has new floors , interior , recon engine , suspension , respray , absolutely everything! Its be in all the VW mags and stops people in their tracks at the shows.

Its up for sale and the price has now dropped to £2800 (the paint job is worth that) so he is putting it on ebay.

I know its not to everyones taste but with all that work done for a fully restored show winner if it was a bay it would fetch £10.000+ but for some reason late type 3's how ever rare just dont seem to ever be worth much :(
