  1. Having bought a 1969 Tintop Bay in San Fran 22yrs ago on my round the world trip and loved every minute of my drive round 29 states of the US and a lot of Canada - I am now trying to buy my 20 yr old son a camper. Budget very limited I know but there must be something out there. If you can assist please drop me a line. 07793 652359 - Julian.

It'll need a lot of work for that budget unless you're seriously lucky.
    Good luck!

have you looked on www.thesamba.com? you'll get a van for that money but shipping to the uk will eat £1400 so bear that in mind

  4. thanks for that tip Ricky - how does importing off Samba work? who delivers it to port etc in the US and same at this end?

edit, once you hire a shipper ( i used kingstown shipping - google them ) they sort EVERYTHING from the second it arrives at the port in america ( i shipped from l.a Dubious from san fran ) to the second it is released from the bonded warehouse in the u.k

hmmm, are you open to a little work( sort of retorical question at that price) but what are you expecting, buying from the states unseen can be a gamble, lts of hidden repair costs like heating systems and exhaust systems missing faulty or bodged. i may know of an engineless van for around that money us dry state import can be viewed in this country

  8. I think like everyone in this boat I am a realist that secretly hopes for a touch of good fortune. I'm not the most technical but I have a pal up the road who is much more technical and would help me with stuff. I think major stuff i would struggle with and get done professionally but other things I am willing to have a go at. I'm quite arty so it should look good eventually if I don't run out of cash. Been offered a few interesting things already - its surprising. I'm in no rush - I have cash here in my hand ready to move - so i can wait and see what comes up - some people have to sell for whatever reason or you get the odd ebay bargain - like with everything you just have to be careful (a lot of scammers about). Maybe after the summer there will be more bargains about. Say October time.

  9. As Ricks says you could try Joker on here or the user Godsgood, both have had bargains, or take a look on the samba if you don't mind the wait and bit of a punt, we can always help with the importing side of things

  11. The busstation.co.uk in portsmouth area has buses around your price range sometimes, delt with them myself and would happily again could be worth a look mate, he had a reasonably tidy sweedish import late bay micro bus with new mot for 6k i seem to remember recently.

  12. because you son is 20 it might be worth while getting something a bit newer like a T25 ,the resale value of such a vehicle is quite good and a little bit more reliable and maybe work onto a t2 when he has gained a little bit more experience or is this vehicle partly for you...? ;)

  13. You can find some good stuff on VZi, I got an amazing lucky strike there paid £1200 for a solid bus that pretty much needed putting back together and painting. It did take 6 months of searching though.

  15. Formbyjules - as your on Mersyside and I'm only 10 minutes drive from CampervansUK , if you want someone to have a provisional look for you I am more than happy to do so (ie: the one identified by the other boys above).
I not a particular expert but could probably tell you enough to make the viewing trip or not........cheers -JIM.

  17. OK - having investigated further - it now appears I have to have a RHD UK spec vehicle for insurance reasons (want my son insured on it too and they wont insure him on an import or LHD) - so with this in mind - my search continues. Now the insurance issue is fixed though I can move as soon as i find the right van. I'd also prefer a pop top ideally and I prefer Doormobile or Westy style poptops for some reason. Not a big fan of Devon or Danbury style pop top - don't ask me why - I just don't think they look as good.

  18. Budget/RHD/particular type of pop-top will narrow your choice methinks , there is a '73 RHD Devon on PistonHeads (about page 6) - in Devon at £6500...................best of luck with your search.

  20. hi mate,i have a 1972 late bay,it have the last bit of welding done this week its had new cross members all round new floor too rear so all welding work will be done and im going to under seal it for the new lucky buyer, and fit in the interior which is great, full red vinyl front and rear seat, cooking unit with twin hob and grill, sink and drainer and lots of cupboard space all round matching vinyl door cards.
the engine has has been took out for a very little welding job around the engine bay.this bay is solid now ready for the next 40 years.
the engine will need fitting back in which if you shop around can be done cheaply.
iv also prepped alot of the body work for a respray as the paint work before wasnt great,iv popped all the windows out ready for the respray and have all the windows and seals ready to put back in when painted.
so all she will need is engine putting back in and some paint and she would be a ready to roll for many years, the welding job is a top job i have some pics of the work done but like i say will be finished this week.
reason im selling is im buying a split screen which i have my wife has had her heart set on
im asking just under 5k... if interested email me at...
    taiyah@btinternet.com
and i can send you a few pics.
