Having contorted myself round the back of the fan housing (back still hurts!) I've confirmed that the flaps and link bar are still in the fan housing. The thermostat and bracket are missing, but that's an easy fix. Question is though, can I fit the linkage rod between the flap link bar and the thermostat with the engine in?
probably not..... where it fits at the top you have to lift the fan housing and then lower it down through the tinware. that's how I did it. some one may tell you a different way.
Thanks, I couldn't remember from when I did the beetle how the top attached. I'll add it to the list of things that need engine dropping, then wait for a nice sunny weekend! Cheers.
