TV`s popped - what to buy ?

  1. My 10 year old LG has finally expired ...
I`m looking at buying a new one but really haven`t got a clue what `features` are these days . Not interested in gaming or wearing silly glasses , just a good (sub 40 inch) tele with built in freeview . I`m led to believe these SMART ones can take channels and catchup from t`internet ??
Not interested in sky / virgin packages - just a decent basic freeview tele .
Budget is about £500 if anyone has any recommendations

    :hattip:

    Tuesday wildchild I'm a circle!

All come with free view (I think) now days but I'd still add a freeview box or a freesat box with a harddrive for yes you've guess it recording.

Ours is an e-motion out of Saintsbury's about 6 years ago, its OK but can vibrate with the sound up to much so I've cobble together some external speakers.

  3. It is worth checking out john lewis as they actually do really good TV's and good deals. Pretty sure you also get a free 5 year warranty. At least we did on our LG. They will price match too

  4. I've got a 47 inch LG smart 3D TV .....best TV I've ever owned!!

I thought the smart TV bits were a gimmick, but I wouldn't be with out them now  ....and we love having 3d films on at family film night

  5. Same as @Diddymen but without 3D - fantastic led tv.
Wouldn't pay for a Sony badge and considering all TV's have LG / Samsung and Phillips guts.
Try Richer Sounds, always have good deals but they don't hang about for long.

  6. Go to Richer Sounds - their 5 year warrantee is 10% of the purchase price and is honoured - good advice also!!

  11. I got my last two TV's from John Lewis and rate them - good customer service, they tend to stock a decent range and give 5 year warranties. The only downside I found is they tend to get busy at peak times which can lead to a wait time to see a salesman if needed.

I bought an iPad in John Lewis.
Tried to pay cash and they freaked!

    £400 odd in £20 notes.
They didn't want to accept it until I pointed out it was legal tender and that it wasn't like I was trying to spend thousands.
In the end a manager was called and it took 3 of them to count it!

Imagine their reaction had they worked in Mercedes when my mate tried to buy a £28k car in cash.....

Take care with smart TV's - we bought a Samsung HD "smart" satellite set top box (STB) a couple of years back - it came with a Youtube app and not a lot else at the time. But since then Google decided to shut down the interface to Youtube that the STB used and so Youtube has now stopped working.

Waaaay back we had an early Philips digital TV with integrated STB which cost the best part of £1000 (at the time my wife and I worked for Philips and they gave both of us £500 of Philips goods a year as part of our salary). And eventually about the time they canned OnDigital, it basically stopped working without being plugged into a newer external STB.

You are better off using a PC connected to the TV for "smart" features as about the only thing that gets properly updated with the latest software properly is Apple and Windows (or Linux ) PCs.

Anything with Android or Apple TV or other proprietary smartness is similarly doomed to be eventually ignored by its manufacturer, long before the TV part of the system has stopped working. At least some of the dongles like the Google one are so cheap you can chuck them away without wrecking the TV.
