hi I have a late bay but every now and then when trying to start just dash lights appear ,I have checked leads on starter all seem fine there is no clicking or noise but it will bump and is good again(until suits) Is this starter /solenoid or could it be something sill before I buy new starter Any ideas cheer
Could be faulty starter wire but you say you've checked them - I had similar and it still turned out to be that - the wire was loose at the spade connector. Could be solenoid or even poor battery.
I found it a combination of the above.... Sticky solenoid and just a slight lack of juice in the battery. Jumping off the daily worked and she sprung back to life easily. Long term is probably a replacement solenoid on the starter, unless someone knows if they're serviceable?
I use to carry a hammer just fr that purpose then one holiday it said feck you and fred the fog over charged us for a newish one.
If the solenoid is sticking, put the van in gear and give it a push (rock it from the back) and then try again.
As above. have this with mine from time to time. Sticky solenoid and low battery charge. damned annoying. Will be swapping my starter over when I get a minute but a tap on the solenoid usually works. IT MUST BE OUT OF GEAR if you are doing it while someone turns the key in the ignition or you will run yourself over!
If you've never had a new loom every wire on your bus is 40ish years old, the last cm or so before every connector will be brittle and corroded to some degree especially ones underneath near the wheels and exhaust. It's worth chopping a bit off and ensuring you're back to bright copper and fitting New copper terminals either with a propper crimping tool or solder. Doesn't take long or cost much but you've eliminated the easiest bit and you'll know it's right!
My comments weren't in response to yours. I was referring to the solenoid whacking method whereby if someone turns the key whilst you give it a tap your actually half under the van in front of the offside wheel. That could end badly!
^this, absolutely. There's nowt wrong with most of the wiring in busses, apart from the last couple of cm. Strip the wires back, nice fresh crimps!
