Just been watching the trouble in Kiev on the box.
Unbelievable seeing a place I've been to so many times literally being torn apart and thrown at the Police.
Got a fair few mates who all live within a few minutes of Independence Square. Spoke to one of them this week and basically he is Marmiteting it.
I hope they can come to some sort of resolution before it descends to full on civil war.

Are these Ukrainian mates Doug? Thought there was supposed to be some sort of truce going on.......If its civil war, who is it between...Pro Moskow and Anti? Have to say I'm not massively au fait with what is going on.....Though I did have a soft spot for Yulia Tymoshenko ;)

Yes mate, guys I worked with when I did a 2 year project there.
There is a sort of truce today but 25+ killed yesterday.
It's the Pro-European public versus the Pr0-Russian government forces basically. The worry they've got now is a load of commandos have been shipped in and they don't ******* about!

  4. I know I should contribute something more grown up and meaningful to this thread, but can I also register my high regard for yulia tymoshenko;)

  10. My wife's from Kiev. We've been married for 8 years and have a flat there. We go out there quite a lot. The main drive behind Yanukovych right now is Putin. The main reason for that is Putin's fear of this spilling over into Russia. If Ukrainians bring down their President, Putin could find himself with a lot of bother on his own turf, just like the 'Arab uprising', not to mention a host of other problems. Sorry, I should have said 'when' the Ukrainian's bring down their President. The demonstrators in Kiev are not terrorists, as is claimed by Putin and Yanukovych. Sure, there is a small Far Right violent faction there. But it's miniscule. There are more Priests taking part in the demos than the Far Right. And some of these Priests have today took it upon themselves to deliberately walk directly into the line of Police fire. The vast majority are normal citizens; many of course from Western Ukraine. But these normal folk are prepared to lay down their lives and take the bullet. And, naturally, some are only too willing to give as good as they get. It is a fact that Police are firing live bullets. They're even firing at doctors treating the injured, as witnessed by BBC journalists. Some protestors fire live rounds back. Put me in the same situation and I would do the same quite frankly. Yanukovych will have to kill them all, because they are not going to give up. And the more he kills, the more hatred grows in his beloved East; an area which I also know very well, as my in-laws live there. No Ukrainian wants to see their 'brothers and sisters' slaughtered. The solution is quite simple: Presidential elections need to be called.

  11. Lots of mercury and Uranium in the Ukraine:thinking:....aside from losing political influence, I can't imagine Putin being prepared to forego cheap resources, used in the Nulear industry.
Regardless of the reasons behind it, it's yet another travesty...we've watched while Syria, the true cradle of civilisation, has been ripped apart, and done absolutely nothing, save make a few disparaging remarks...while on the homefront, we're constantly reminded that all the world's ills are due to muslim fundamentalists.....
Sooner or later, the truth will out that the destruction of the World Trade Centre was an inside job....providing the justification for the events that followed...
Paul Wolfowitz and the rest of the Neo conservative w*nkers have engineered this so called New World Order....it's no less fundamentalist than the Muslims they're holding responsible...both are based on dogma, both rely on fear to keep the population in check....

Hats off to those prepared to stick their necks out for something approaching democracy

  12. Hmmm New World Order, do I detect a hint of irony? The last proponents of that doctrine also used a conspiracy theory as a means of gaining political control.

  13. No irony whatsoever......I genuinely believe that the trade centre was a put up job (or certain people were given enough leeway to carry it out)....solved a few issues for Enron, when their servers and paperwork when up in smoke....provided the cartel behind the Bush administration (Snr. & Jr.) with another excuse to invade IraQ (? of all places) and precipitate Middle Eastern meltdown, while justifying vast military spend, state sanctioned spying and humongous contracts to rebuild infrastructure destroyed as a consequence....
No conspiracy here....just economics IMO Despicable

Glad someone else said that first^ but I agree, it's so simple and obvious it slaps you in the face.

  15. No it's not, Zedster. It's daft.

Not to me. Remember the adage "Why is this lying politician lying?". Start there when one moves it's lips and you'll save yourself a lot of pondering. Or maybe you believe what politicians say and think they're there to help us?

  18. Because there's not a shred of credible evidence that shows that 9/11 was anything other than what it appeared to be.

  19. I don't often believe what politicians say, as there's invariably an agenda behind it, but that doesn't mean I have to believe every outlandish theory that's proposed.

Unfortunate events in Kiev simply illustrate that there's still plenty of home-grown simmering unrest in many parts of the world. They don't need the assistance of others to kick stuff off. The world's a volatile place, which is unlikely to change, unfortunately.
