Trouble engaging first gear

  1. Hi

Im having trouble getting the car to select first gear. To successfully do it I have to push it forward hard then lift the clutch slowly until it seems to grab first and clunks into gear. Lift too quick and it crunches. Ive had it looked at including linkages etc but am told it needs a new gearbox. The gear selector was really sloppy but i had one round bush at the front replaced and fiddled to make it as best as possible. Even now you still cant get it into first with the handbrake on as they clash.

Before I go down this long and expensive route, anyone have any ideas????? ???

  2. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

Where does the clutch bite? Perhaps it's dragging...

  3. hows selecting reverse gear ... :-

thats a good sign of a worn or badly adjusted clutch...

  4. I have the same problem with my first gear; I then have to hold it in when it's selected. I was also told that I'd need a new gearbox to fix it, but that I might as well just try living with it. I don't find it to be a massive issue (except during slow speed manoeuvring).

  5. I sometimes have trouble finding 1st, it also seems to move slightly to the right when the engine is fully warmed up.
What I do at traffic lights is from neutral without my foot on the clutch I push the gear lever towards 1st and feel for it, hold it there an then when the lights change depress the clutch and push it into 1st.
This works for me, your issue might be different though

  6. i forgot it also pops out of gear if you dont hold it forward in first. Reverse seems ok but is not that easy to find. Its still just all so sloppy but am wondering just how much of that is how they all are. As for the clutch bite bit I find that if i cant push it into first when at the lights, i hold it there and lift the clutch slowly then it sort of clunks in and im ready to go.

I see just kampers do them for £699 :( then theres fitting....gulp

  7. Mine did this, it just needed the clutch adjusting

  9. Thanks for replies, right out with the Haynes for some clutch adjustment :)

  10. Haha as some witnessed this weekend when I got stuck at the traffic lights as it just wouldn't go into gear ended up sticking it in 3rd n edging forward a little then just managed to get it into second... Mine pops out of gear if my revs aren't high enough too/speed... Haha all part of the fun with these things haha,.( will get it sorted at some point I hope) :)

  11. there is a bend in the clutch cable conduit that has to be right,

or the conduit can become detached sometimes, worth checkin
