Trailing Arms - removal

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by sailorbill, Dec 24, 2011.

  1. Help please - I'm trying to get the trailing arms off but I've got an upper ball joint that just revolves (the threaded bit) as I try to undo the nut.

Any suggestions as to how to get the nut off? Can be reasonable destructive as they are coming off for new Lemforder BJs to be fitted.

The end of the thread will be shaped to take a 10mm (or 11 - can't remember) open ended spanner, or an allen key. Once you get the lock nut that far it should come off ok.

  3. Zed, many many thanks, I've got it off after spending an hour with a grinder to grind the bolt off (carefully).

This is a first time procedure for me so now I know what to do if I encounter a similar problem on the other side - look for the squared off end of the ball joint.

Bottom trailing arm pulled out OK, top one seems stick in there!

It's under a little tension that presses it down onto the bump stop - jack it up just off the stop and tap it out (hard as you can in the confined space) with a lump hammer. Half way along the arm there are "tabs" - hit these.;)

  5. Zed,

Many thanks - I'll put a jack under it as you suggest.

When it comes to putting it all back - do the grub screws go in before the spindle is put on or after?

    karma to you.

Ams on first they'll bottom out at the right place to get the screws in correctly.
