Tracker recommendations.......

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Fronkjunior, Dec 10, 2012.

  1. Hi, I am looking to get a tracker installed and am wondering if anyone can recommend a particular make. I want to get a professionally installed monitored one rather than a self install device or hiding a mobile phone somewhere! I have heard that brand 'Scorpian' mentioned somewhere which is monitored but also allows you to self monitor on line. Any of your words of wisdom will be well received........

    Thanks.

  2. I bought one a couple of years ago but haven't gotten around to fitting it yet!!! The wiring is straightforward, but I'm put off by the technical side of "talking" to the unit by mobile phone!

The spec is that you can text the unit, and it will reply with it's GPS position. The big advantage which persuaded me to buy the unit was the ability to remotely power a relay. This could be wired to immobilize the coil, for example. ( or explosive device - only joking! >:D )

If the vehicle battery is disconnected, the unit sends a "distress" signal, with co-ordinates, from it's built-in battery. Likewise if the vehicle is removed from a predefined area.

As I've not fitted it, I'm not in a position to evaluate it's effectiveness so would appreciate comments from anyone who has!

Here's one similar to what I have, but I think mine was a bit cheaper so hunt around

  3. Fronkjunior wants a professionally monitored one - these are all DIY monitoring.
I am not sure I'd want to pay an annul fee for professional monitoring, what are the advantages?

  4. Apparently they will call the police who will respond to a monitored system and will be able to actively track and follow the vehicle where they may not if you use a self track device. Also, if your phone is off, on silent, you are asleep or on holiday, then it could be some time before you are notified and the try to convince the police to act.

  5. we have one fitted and its by Tracker (easy to remember). the insurance company insisted we fit one for us to get cover if we park our bus on the drive overnight as part of the agreed value. I wanted certified fitting for the insurance and also the thought of a patrol car filled with bobbies holding rubber truncheons chasing after any toe rag that nicks our bus.

the install was very professional and the unit is well hidden and anonymous which is handy given how few places there are to put one in a bay.

a policeman told me that sometimes thieves nick a vehicle and park it up somewhere for a day or so to see if its tracked. if no one comes for it they know there isn't a tracker on it and off they go.

I am hoping never to need to find out if its any good.

  6. ^^^ true, my mates house was robbed and they took his porsche cayenne to carry the loot. It was left parked in slough trading estate presumably to see if it had a tracker.
unfortunately GPS jammers are cheap and easy to get now

  7. As far as I'm aware, the Tracker system doesn't use GPS.

The small GPS/text units work well enough, but are easy to disable even without a jammer.

  8. I have a CGmart tracker with sim that is for sale. It uses GPS/SMS/GPRS

You could always buy this one and get it professionally fitted ;)
