Towbar / Exhaust

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Jon Herbert, May 30, 2020.

  1. Hi
Just got hold of this towbar so I can fit a bike carrier. Now does anyone have one like this and what exhaust do you have if running with a type 4 2L? The towbar has coincided with my Empi single quiet pack rusting through so I need to order a new exhaust. Guessing a standard original spec would be fine but can I go down any other route as I had planned getting a stainless steel when the time came to replace

Looks quite similar to a Westy one that was fitted to my bus once.
Can’t help with non standard exhaust option I’m afraid but I would check your bike carrier fits the ball before you install it as some older bars had different size balls and the Westy one I had wasn’t the current European standard size and wouldn’t fit my carrier.
Just thought it was worth mentioning.

  3. Oh no, that doesn’t sound good. Didn’t realise there were different ball sizes. Nothing is ever simple

You’ll probably be fine. But worth checking!

Stock exhaust would be marvelous. Yes I am selling one, it's only done a few thousand miles. It's an Ernst one, the best stock one available. £75 plus post. Selling because it's proved a bit restrictive for 2.4L

American balls are 2”, slightly larger, of course, than the more usual 50mm that we have. :) The pic is my CSP Python exhaust with a Westy tow bar.

Yeah figured that bar cane from an imported bus they’d got in where my bus was being restored, which they put on my bus when they lost my Witter.
Took me a while to work out why it didn’t fit!

  8. I’ll take a look at it tomorrow in daylight.

  9. Just to be safe in these unpredictable times, can we all measure our balls in the morning, please? Thanks.

Did you have to remove the "skirt" off your bumper to fit the CSP. And out of interest what diameter pipe is yours 42mm or 45mm.

The heat shield above the exhaust is still fitted, is that what you mean? Nothing has been removed from the bumper. 2316cc Type 4, 42mm Python, plenty of clearance to the tow bar but it’s a Westy tow bar and the bumper is further from the body than standard.

  13. I have the same towbar, which has a 50mm ball. I don't know what the exhaust is as it was on the bus (2l engine) when we bought it seven years ago. It's a stainless steel one but looks pretty much stock to me. No heat shield above the exhaust and nothing removed from the bumper as far as I can tell. It's all removed from the bus at the mo as the engine's out for refurb, but I can take more piccies/dimensions if you want.[IMG][IMG]

    Nice:thumbsup:
    Thanks for the reply. Cheers.
Will post a picture of the skirt I'm on about later.

  15. That’s great, just need to find out from the knowledgeable on here what make that exhaust is... ..please

  16. There are no manufacturer's details on the exhaust, but it's 910mm long (excl tail pipe) and 155x125mm across the end (which is oval).

Lower heat shield p/n 211 707 399? My bus didn’t have it fitted when I bought it and as the bumper doesn’t get hot, I’m not going to fit one – but VW must have thought it was required.

  18. Is it that slinky black one?

  19. That's actually not a heatshield but a "gravel guard" the heatshield should be above the exhaust and below the tin wear

  20. Looks like a standard westy towbar, it replaces the bumper irons and tucks in behind the bumper, a standard exhaust will fit but most exhausts should also fit if they fit in the standard location.
