I've got a type 4 2.0litre, which had a bit of a leak from the rocker cover...replaced all the pushrod seals, and the new Cork gasket, etc, all Good....no leak. On investigating, I cleaned out the oil breather, and checked the feed into the carb. The air filter was completely minging and clogged, so I cleaned it for now, and ordered a new one, which is taller, so more air flow if needed? Now, its an Empi weber twin choke copy.......i know, I know! Its always been fine though, After I fettled it, and the van runs really nice, as long as you start it, and let it warm up before setting off, there are no icing problems, or flat spots, as long as you dont stamp on the loud pedal, but feed the power in.... You know what I mean, standard vw style! So the new filter arrived, and it is the taller version, ordered on purpose, because I wanted plenty of air through, so that the breather would be free to do its job......in case the leak was due to crankcase pressure? Sounds like a plan? Anyway, its running lovely again, but just started to idle really low and cut out on coming to a halt at lights etc..... So, before I mess with anything, could it now be getting too much air, because of the clean/taller filter, and the mixture is now wrong? Thanks, sorry for the ramble, happy bank holiday!
Doesn’t sound likely. You could run with no air filter at all, and the engine should run much the same. More likely that the carb has been set up with a clogged air filter. You’ve changed it for a clean one, so your mixture has gone up the swannee.
Also check you didnt put dirt in the primary idle jet - unscrew the holder nearest the electric choke and pull out the jet and see if you can see through the 0.4mm ish diameter hole in the end. Then blast with carb cleaner or compressed air holding firmly or watch it fly off.. . Its a common problem especially if you touched fuel hoses or took the carburettor off. This might have been there all along compensating for having the choke on all the time with a dirty air filter.
Haynes and Bentley actually recommend that twin-choke carbs are dropped in the canal, but there may not be one handy.
These twin choke carbs work in Orange County California within 20 miles of the EMPI HQ. Where it is warm and sunny all year round, Disneyland radiates love and peace, surfers surf, and Venice Beach is full of its beautiful inhabitants. Up norf by San Fransisco, buses with EMPI twin chokes are stuttering and dying in the Pacific fog Further north, where vampires live apparently, it rains all the time, and busses immobilised by their EMPI twin chokes just sit rotting by the roadside In Chicago, a canal became a Superfund site with all the waste dumped in it.. It needs heroic work to make the 32/36 go on a T4 engine in the British climate. You should be able to out perform a Nissan Micra at the lights, and not get bogged down.. I nearly rammed a Beetle on the way to a Slough Swapmeet once. He floored it, the Beetle beside him floored it. The beetle in front of me bogged down, and I had to back off in my bus . The beetle outside him shot off. I am using one of these dreaded carburettors but it is basically plumbed in place of a stock carburettor complete with preheated air and exhaust heat risers that work.
Just a quick update.... I adjusted the mix screw, and its never ran as well! Over 7 years I've had it, and its suddenly become a different beast!
