It is hard to find a person in society today who has not been touched by cancer in some way, either directly or indirectly. World Cancer Day hopes to honor those who are fighting and those who have been lost to this dreadful disease. This unique day of remembrance and determination aims to help people understand more about cancer and inspire them to take action so that hopefully one day there will be many in society who are not touched by cancer.

While there are various types of cancers, the disease most commonly arises when cell mutations lead to growths called tumours. Unless treated, cancerous growths can start to spread and infect other parts of the body.

There’s no denying that cancer is an extremely serious and widespread health issue. Worldwide it’s the second-leading cause of death after cardiovascular diseases and it particularly impacts socio-economically disadvantaged communities and countries. Yet occasions such as World Cancer Day remind us that advances in research, prevention, early detection and treatment mean there is much cause for hope.

I wonder why we seem to be getting more cancers now than in the past. It used to say 1 in 3, now it’s 1 in 2. You would think figures would go down. Is it because we eat food etc that is processed or vegetables grown with chemicals? Who knows.

  3. It came as a shock to me when I was diagnosed, I asked questions one was diet, what can I eat to reduce the impact.
    None have been forthcoming,
This is not a criticism of the care I have received which has been absolutely beyond complaint or the op I am waiting to have but when you see kids suffering with cancers you wonder why and what triggers it especially at such a young age.
My brother a 14 stone 6.3 well built guy is now 8 stone and on continuous oxygen due to the ravages of this awful disease.
