Rum is a distilled alcohol, specifically distilled from byproducts of sugarcane. Some varieties are made from molasses, others from sugarcane juice but all rum, when its finished being distilled, is clear. The color you see in rum is from additives or seasonings, and are not in any way a bad thing. Rum first was created in the Caribbean after it was discovered that molasses could be fermented into alcohol. Ironically, it was the slaves who made this discovery, but it was the Colonials who discovered how to distil it into true rum. So important did rum become in the years to follow that it played a major role in the political system of the colonies, being offered as a bribe to those the candidates wished to curry favour with. The people thus coerced were no fools, however. They would attend multiple hustings to determine which of their patrons might provide them with the largest quantity of rum. Thus it can be fairly said that rum was of such note that it literally decided elections. I'm currently working my way through this:
When serving with the Gurkhas in Hong Kong we were often served Rum after an exercise or to celebrate an event the Gurkhas called it Rakshi but it was a little different from what they made back home in Nepal. We drank it from little paper cups with handles on. If you didn't drink the generous tot quickly enough all you could hear around the room was plop plop plop as the paper cup hit the floor and you were left with only the handles in you fingers. The rum used to climb the seam by capillary action and eat the glue separating handle and cup. Ayo Gorkhali
The only rum for me was Red Rum (our local horse back in the day ) - he was murder for the other horses
As a former deliverer of yachts 2 & from the Carribean I AM a fan of the golden & the dark varieties, the light and the spiced are dangerous or too fashionable respectively. Barcadi white is isn't a rum btw & if you do like rum enjoy it while you can as I hear it's about to become "the next big thing" so that'll be the end of "The Fisherman's Favourite"
Sorry you already got it ...i'am to slow . Watched the Shining for the tenth time probably last week ...a classic and still doesn't seem to age , considering it was made a good while back .
