Sermon Alert: Complete and utter tosh...in common with other preposterous notions such as God, Brahma, Allah, Satan, Lucifer, Demons, Spirits, Angels etc. etc. These constructs have developed over thousands of years in an attempt to make some sort of sense of the world in which we live, and provide answers to those questions for which we will never have a satisfactory explanation. Rituals serve to reinforce structure and hierarchy. Slaughtering a lamb in April will not result in a better harvest the following September...how can it? Praying for rain will not influence the conditions necessary for precipitation in the slightest. Yet human beings cling to fanciful rituals and questionable religious beliefs because at some level, it offers comfort, succour or hope. Do I believe in a higher state of consciousness? Yes. Does this have anything whatsoever to do with a God? No. Could these higher states of consciousness be achieved through ritual? Yes. Will having my palm read by some old charlatan in a seafront shack tell me anything about my future prospects? Somehow I doubt it... IMO The only person to have come close to offering a full and frank explanation of human existence was a fat Indian bloke who sat around and thought a lot....and then gave up when he realised he didn't have the capacity to understand it. As soon as he gave up thinking, the 'answers' became clear....and even he said take what I say with a pinch of salt...
