Remember, remember! The fifth of November, The Gunpowder treason and plot… Known as Guy Fawkes Night or Fireworks Night, Gunpowder Day focuses on the plot by Guy Fawkes and other conspirators to blow up Britain’s parliament in 1605. Rebelling against the persecution of Catholics by King James I, they planned to kill the monarch during his visit to parliament. But the scheme was foiled and the traitors executed. On Gunpowder Day, families construct an effigy of Guy Fawkes to be burned on a bonfire that evening. Fireworks are also set off to add to the celebrations. Public displays are also held and the biggest celebration of Gunpowder Day is in Lewes in East Sussex, England. Six bonfire societies host their own fireworks displays and gargantuan bonfires. After sunset, a large procession of all of the societies moves through Lewes. Many members carry flame torches and a river of fire can be seen flowing through the town during the evening.
Maybe someone should resurrect the Gunpowder Plot & blow up the useless shower that's in Parliament today. I'm speaking about Australia but I'd assume it's the same in the U.K. It used to be celebrated down here when I was a child but it seems to have disappeared over the past 50 or so years
If it's not raining too much, we might go and sit on a hill and watch other people's fireworks! I love 'em - I'm like a big kid around fireworks!
I love watching fireworks, but prefer to keep a distance away from them .... as a very very small child I was burnt on the neck by a tiny ember that had escaped from our spitting coal fire, have always hated bangs and spits from fires as far as I can remember. The same with fireworks - used to hate it when boys from school used to set off "bangers". We currently have an open fire to burn logs - I love to watch it, but jump every time it spits out embers
That's a female perspective perhaps? My memories involve firing hand-held air-bomb repeaters at each other in the park. Just the sort of thing I'd have seriously admonished my own children for.
Its weierd it nearly always rains doesnt it im not doing it this year the gran kids will get some extra pocket money instead , ive decided not to celebrate that guy bloke cocking it up anymore , i wonder how it would have changed things if he hadnt ( cocked it up i mean) i do like watching a good display though but they cost a fortune now , my mums old neighbour was a chemist and he used to make them for us when we were kids have fun if you do , n take care they can be dangerous especially air bomb repeaters in the wrong hands
