Just wondered if anybody has replaced a Devon top with a westy one? What's the difference in opening sizes? Obviously the advantages are greater with a full width bed up top creating the living space down the bottom permanent. Just considering costs, etc and wondered if people had any thoughts on the conversion, straightforward or not?
Don't forget that it would also be possible to go full width up top with a late Devon double top roof . They seem like a very good idea to me. There's more practicality as you say re sleeping up top and keeping the downstairs for living space. http://www.devonmoonraker.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/bay/1979_Doubletop.pdf
I'd wondered about trying that in a standard Devon roof but imagine the height is a bit of an issue ?
I made this change although I'm not sure if mine was an original Devon. The hole seemed to be the same size as for a Westy roof but I had to make up my own bed boards etc. there was steel reinforcement around the hole to keep the rigidity of the roof. I got the Westy roof from eBay as I wasn't going to spend £25oo on a new one and sold on the devon roof for £300 from memory. I'll probably need to paint the roof at some point as it's a bit tired but it does for now. I'm told it was a fairly easy change. The guys at Bilbo's campers did it.
Cheers buddy, will measure and give them a tinkle for a quote. Probably looking at next year now but worth a punt

Hell that angled metal over the door is going to cause some serious head injuries. there has to be a better way of achieving this!
That's my camper in the photos! No , no one has banged their head on the strip. The basic idea was pinched from Mrs Moosey ! The timber is ultralight motorhome MDF On mine. It's hinged in sections to fold up nice and compact. It wouldn't hold 2 adults' weight I wouldn't have thought.
I've done this myself and it works ok, this is Adams ( Joycee ) thread that i copied it from http://thelatebay.com/index.php?threads/converting-our-devon-bunks-into-a-bed.25959/
Sorry id no intention of dissing your bus but ive banged my head on the roof above the slider many times.
No worries. Me n the wife are near midgets ! I didn't know that the guy was selling kits for that price.
I don't have cushions, it's topped with lightweight motorhome carpet. I put a 30mm foam topper on it for the kids to sleep on. There's about 600mm headroom on it.
I'm just thinking about if I go away fella, it'd be easier to sleep up top and have downstairs for living. That's all really.
Problem I see is that I still have the Devon lip around the edge of my pop up cut out so wasn't sure how it'd work really?
