Tick over very high after drive

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by CraigyP, May 8, 2016.

  1. Just got back from a 25 mile drive (mostly motorway) and pulled up at home, put into park (auto) and its reving very high
If I put it in reverse or drive the revs drop as it should but still too much and of course it jumps like its ready to shoot off as tick over is too high
Have noticed electric fuel pump is louder than normal when I turn key
Engine is very hot to touch but it had been sitting there for a good 10 /15 mins before I had a look around
Apart from that I cant spot anything different
    Any ideas would be appreciated
    Cheers

    Choke stuck on

  3. Checked choke all fine
started it up put the gun on it seems to be bouncing between 4 and 7 btdc
Sounds normal now but with the gun it bounces between 980 1420 at one point going to 2120
Fuel pump sounds back to normal

  4. Think throttle cable might be catching somewhere and not fully returning but dosnt explain the readings I was getting from timing gun
They would be caused by the dizzy I guess?
Ill whip it out in the week and have a look at it

Air leak brought on by warmed up engine opening up a gap, or worn throttle spindles which combines an air leak with the throttle plate sticking.

Does the idle drop if you tap on the accelerator ? - my old 34PICT-3 used to suffer the sticky throttle plate and leaking throttle spindles which would clear if you just lightly tapped the plate. And the replacement Weber Progressive also did this until I strengthened the return spring and modified the linkage.

If the revs displayed by the timing gun are bouncing around, try clipping the sensor somewhere else. The timing measurement may also be being affected.

But a sticky distributor may be one of the problems. Try popping the little cap off the side of the distributor, hold the distributor horizontal and drip some 3 in 1 or similar in the weights area , and also make sure the felt pad under the rotor arm gets some 3 in 1.

If it is a Bosch distributor, it is worth trying hard to avoid buying a replacement.

  6. Iv been having a play around and im pretty sure (with out pulling it apart) its the home brew throttle cable set up
Feels like its sticking somewhere in the tube through the tin
Spring on the webber was replaced when I fitted it a couple of years ago
As for the dizzy its not a bosch its a acuspark I think as the bosch craped itself a couple of years ago
Im sure I have another bosch somewhere which I was meaning to dig out and fit but never did
Think I will do this week
