  2. Ah, guess what I have, well spotted @Zed

I wonder what I need to fill it with then? Or perhaps using isopropyl alcohol, with its later opening is better?

I'd go for that if you have a later engine - heck you'll be improving it!

  4. Just bigger B&Ps, but I am going to try this, after all, what is there to lose? The thermostat is already fubar.

  5. Bum, there's one bit just under one of the four claw's that didn't take the solder:(

So close, and yet so far.

    Try again.
    I hate soldering.

  7. The metal is getting thinner after several attempts :( Perhaps I will have another go tomorrow, it's so very close.

I think I really needed two to make one good one, I am out of practice with the gas torch, it's very like plumbing...just without the PTFE tape.

Edit: It reminded me of jewellery courses at college, us 'apprentices' were only allowed to do ' copper pot bashing', no precious metals, I was better with a CNC milling machine and a CAD program.

Theres still some around .. I was surprised the other week when I bought a T1 thermostat off eBay for £32.. it turned out to be NOS, in original protective paint, and no sign of any marks on the tapped threads ... description "vw aircooled thermostat".
