The Saga of Tortuga's "Resto"

  1. 'Pologies for the lack of photos, but it was dark when I finished... :(
    Flattened back the primer round the window ready for paint. Really pleased that the line between body colour and the primer is much less obvious now. Paint next on that area as soon as I confirm what 'VW White' Tortuga is... :confused:
    Also finished insulating the top of the engine cover and firewall. Mainly to stop it getting damaged, I also laid the 3mm ply over the engine cover - can't believe the difference this made :D:D:D

  3. Views like this almost convince me that the van is almost finished :D

    ...I've only got the rear interior to start and finish...:rolleyes:

    ...then I can move onto the cab!:)

  4. Jawel paints is just down the road from you maybe they can make you up some paint matched to your van if you cant figure out the correct paint code. I also have a Ral classic chart I can lend you if it helps. The backs looking good now thats gonna be a sweet van

  5. Cheers @Mully_89! Now waiting on my (heat) insulation arriving to continue with work in the back...
    Called the guys who carried out the respray today and it turns out its VW Pastel White (L90?), so no problems there :D

  6. No progress on re-spraying around the window :( (although I did purchase a rattle can of VW Pastel White) - waiting on suitable conditions combined with sufficient time...
    Installed the door checkstrap obtained from @poptop2. Nice to cross parts and a job off my list of things to buy/do, especially as the checkstrap appeared on that list very early on... :)
    Attached to the door pillar...

    Roll of insulation arrived from Campervan Conversions on Wednesday. Went with this as it looked to be similar to the LowE stuff recommended by a few people on here (in particular @vanorak), but was about 50% cheaper than the cost quoted on LowE's website;). On arrival, I was super chuffed to find it actually turned out to be the LowE stuff:D so this is the result of this weekend's work;

    Coming along nicely dude. looking forward to seeing it all done. :thumbsup:

  8. Nice bus, I like it in white, is the colour staying? :)

  9. Whoops haven't posted for a bit.
    Thanks @poptop2 and @Chrisradioman. Yes on the colour for the most part - I want the cab (Inc the cab roof) satin black with some kind of transition into the white back 2/3 eventually.
    Photo update of interior soon...

  10. Time for another long overdue update - I haven't given up, just kept forgetting to show my progress! The following photos document the work carried out during July and the beginning of August.
    Finally finished repainting around the rear RHS window and refitted it using new rubbers with silver trim...
    [IMG]
    ...but the middle window on the LHS also turned out to be leaking around the rubbers (I later found out the rear LHS one does as well :(), so out that came for the rust to be treated.
    [IMG]
    Looks like I'm going to end up using some filler around this one since a load came away with the rust when I took the rubber out. Oh well, there's some small areas that need it on the RHS as well, so looks like I'll be stripping all that new paint back off again before next summer :mad:.
    Still, both cab doors received new inner window scrapers...
    [IMG]
    ...and the LHS door received a new opening quarter-light frame and rubber :)
    [IMG]
    The new rubber for the RHS quarter-light didn't get fitted in the end, as when I took out what I thought was an intact quarter-light, I found the frame to be only marginally better than the old one from the other side, while the rod on the base of the quarter-light itself was conspicuous by its absence... Complete new quarter-light needed here methinks! :D
    Still, I wasn't going to let disintegrating window frames prevent me from taking Tortuga down to Pembrokeshire for a week of surfing. Oh no, I said last year that the van would be on the campsite this year, and I was determined that leaky windows weren't going to stop me! So the roofbars from MixDubs that have been sat in the shed since Busfest last year also got fitted. (Oh, and those damn eyelids went as well :D)
    [IMG]
    Of course that meant I had room to fit another surfboard...

    Very tidy. :thumbsup:

  12. Thanks Malc. I also took Tortuga up to York last weekend to my mates 30th birthday 'festival'. The admiring comments and covetous looks from everyone there, plus the first time sleeping in the Van (albeit on old seat foam on the floor) totally made up for having to miss Busfest :D.

  13. I am watching Breaking Bad again and so was delighted to be reminded that Tortuga is a lovely bus rather than the exploding head of a decapitated cartel gangster balanced on a tortoise.

  14. Heh. I'd forgotten that - which season does that turn up in again? I had to endure odd questions from members of my physics class last year when they 'linked' together the facts that I am officially employed as a Chemistry Teacher, I own and drive a camper van, I am losing my hair and I have a beard...

  15. Term has started again, so I'm back to 'Busday' on Saturdays and I'm hoping to continue with the soundproofing (mainly the cab area) and the insulating (the cab again and the remainder of the roof). Thoughts during meetings at work have been turning toward the interior construction - specifically; if I go down the route of a wooden framework faced by thin ply sheeting, how thick should the wood forming the framework be? 12mm or would 18mm be better? Thoughts / ideas / advice on this much appreciated!

  16. Hiya, its in season 2 when hank has got promoted after shooting Tuco but has PTSD and won't admit it. What a fabulous series. By the way I suggest you take to hiding an old phone above a ceiling tile in your classroom too.

  17. Long time since last post, so time for update. No photos due to failing light (and I reckon people are sick of my multiple views of insulation by now).
    Soundproofing and low-e insulation in the rear has finally been finished and sealed with tape. To fill the gap behind interior panels I've decided to install 100mm loft insulation and a vapour barrier (heavy-duty rubble sacks) for extra warmth. I've also purchased 5'x 5' birch ply for starting work on the interior and booked in for the interior panels and seats to be done by @delilah's VW Camper Furnishings early next year.
    Today I've started cutting exterior 3mm ply for the custom panels in the rear (the birch ply is for visible woodwork).
    Last job was to remove the battery for trickle charging over Christmas.

  18. Finally managed to take some photos of recent progress. First up, the nearside panel that will be covered by @delilah - a second small panel will fit in the very rear corner, but I haven't cut this yet...
    [IMG]
    Secondly, the offside wooden panel, which will form part of the interior of a full height cupboard. Both panels are made from exterior 3mm ply, which I intend to varnish for additional protection;
    [IMG]
    Finally, the moisture barrier behind the offside panel. I've filled the air-gap between the LowE insulation (on the inner surface of the outer skin) and the wooden panel with fibreglass loft insulation for extra heat and sound insulation;
    [IMG]
    Comments, criticism, insults and suggestions, welcome as always...

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

    Panels look tight, have you allowed for material wrapped round?

  20. Not yet, but that long panel will have to come off again for the insulation behind it, so I can easily trim the edges. How much should I be trimming them down by?
    The offside one isn't being wrapped in material and yes, that is tight.
