Just got the latest issue of camper and bus and I was looking a vans for sale. My question is when did the cost of a bay get more than a splitscreen.

There is a 1979 bay for £22,500!!!!!! Is it made of gold, I remember when you couldnt give a late bay away

There are Bays which go for more than that, with dealers (like these http://www.gdaykombis.co.uk/products/index.php?cat=1&subcat=1&tertcat=2) selling the best ones for £30k, some for more. Of course, there's a world of difference between a £30k bus and a £10k bus. For £30k you'd be getting something almost as good as new, probably, in some cases, better than new, certainly something requiring very little maintenance. Recently, in a thread about the new Danbury Brazilian Bays, I commented that they're likely to reduce the value of our beloved Bays - by increasing the supply of something which looks like ours. I can't remember who it was, but another poster said completely the opposite - that Brazilian Bays were actually increasing our Bays' values. Having thought about it, I would agree. After all, a new singing and dancing Danbury Brazilian Bay costs £45k and is proven to lose about £20k in depreciation in the first 3 to 4 years. Surely then, buying the best quality, original, as new, 1970s Bay for £30k, which is still likely to be worth that in 3 to 4 years time (perhaps more), would seem to be the best bet by comparison. It seems this 'comparison' factor may have something to do with it. Then again, what's so strange about it? 20 years ago you could pick up a nice old Jag E Type for peanuts. Nowadays, the same car will set you back up to ten times the amount.

It was me that made that comment - just the simple fact that Danbury's are easier for companies to buy and run as a commercial vehicle and use for publicity etc. because they are brand new, can be specce'd and built for you, and have modern emmisions etc. If you own it for three years and then write it off on the books mores the better - even Brazilian Bays last that long!

The more publicity, the more the appeal.

Splitties are not used as much in promo videos etc anymore because its a major outlay to take one and livery it up - hence the gap Danbury's fill.

Buses have the benefit of being practical - as air fares rise etc or people have families, then a bus is a viable holiday tool - add in to that the cool factor and you are on to a winner.

As for restored v new - most people want new I guess - but like most things (think vintage rolex's) unless the new is miles better than the old, people in the know want the rarity of the old.

If you own it for three years and then write it off on the books mores the better - even Brazilian Bays last that long!
If it's a commercial vehicle cost, say £30000, then £25000 can be written off in year 1. If you were running a limited company, that would save you £5000 in Corporation Tax for example. So, at the end of year 1, it's written down to £5000 (£30k less £25k). But let's say it was sold in year 2 for £22000. You'd then be making a profit of £17000 upon which tax of £3400 is payable. So whilst you've only saved £1600 in tax, you've actually lost £8000 in depreciation, so you're actually £6400 worse off. There's a general misconception that things can be written off on the books and that's the end of that. Yes, when you buy it, that's true. But when you sell it, it's pay-back time, unless you're replacing it with another van. Best to buy a commercial vehicle which is at least three years old, I say, one that's already had its depreciation hit. Buying any vehicle new is a mugs game IMO in any circumstance.

How would the revenue interpret a 40 year old van? Would you be allowed to buy that as a company vehicle?

Could you run the repair costs through the company? What about the benefit in kind?

We all have vans and they are worth more day by day. What's not to like? Aren't many purchases/investments you can say that of.

I bet you like me bought yours because you think they are ace and for family fun and the fact it is effectively an investment is a fringe benefit.

Unsure if that's correct in purely fiscal terms...to me an investment is something I might buy the once and it will increase in value over time.

If you only make one outlay on buses they will in time deteriorate and loose value unless mothballed.

You have to keep re investing in them both in terms of money and time.

Now return on investment in non financial terms is where it's at for most of us!

If the van is used for private use then, generally, the PAYE benefit in kind annual amount is £1014 (in tax and NI). A 40 year old vehicle purchased by the company is treated in exactly the way as described above and, generally, all running expenses are claimable for tax purposes.

Personally, i have seen a massive resurge of Beetles this year.
I fear the insane price tags on Bays coupled with the high price of fuel is making them less appealing to your average joe.
The money you have to lay out to buy one, keep it going, and fuel it, could buy a family a lot of nice holidays that dont involve you sleeping in a van.
I think prices will settle around 8k for good bays.
Ive only had a handful of customers new to the bay scene this year, which is very different to previous years.
I reckon the busses here will mainly be traded among owners who already own em, most people i come across simply cant afford to buy one outright first time now.

Only my personal opinion of course..

The bay I had before this one, I bought for £1500. Sold it for £1000.

This one cost £8000 in far worse nick. The difference 16 years makes

My most expensive beetle was £1200 and my cheapest was £250 tax and tested left hooker.

Have you guys been watching the van market? Unless you have a van that's perfect inside and out, you won't get anywhere near what they were selling for last year if you sell it at all. Perhaps it's the weather, or maybe the bubble has burst...

I bought my running Westy 3 years ago from a bloke in kidderminster who was selling it for his mate that sadly hung himself for £500.
Since spent over 3 grand on it and now it's gotta be worth at least .... £ 800. :-

I think they all have a limit ,just like living in a street where every house has sold for a 100k there is very little you can do to increase the value of your house..

resto unsprayed 4k or less [mot`d]

nice finished bay 6k or less [mot`d]

nice finished westy/dorma/etc 8k or less [mot`d]

nice original painted one owner t25 low milage delher profit 12k... ;D
