The POO BUS gone but not forgotten.

  1. The simple rule of thumb is that no hot air (from the underside of the engine) should be able to leak back to the cool (top of engine) side. Obviously you have the heater pipe to and from the heater fan and another at the back supplying warm air to the air intake ( for start up) apart from that there shouldn't be any other holes through the tin wear. Even sensors such as oil pressure have rubber grommets fitted to prevent hot air getting to the cold air side.

thanks martin, we have hit a rather larger problem than this to be honest.....if you take a look in the thread i posted in mech and tech asking for tinware identification, you'll notice i've posted a video showing many missing tin pieces.......the video can be directly accessed by clicking on my signature link to my you tube. i'll get round to plugging all the gaps in the tin but right now my focus has gone from improving the van during the winter lay up to saving the engine!

  9. Ricky, don't swap your bus. You've got a really nice one. Yes a few things aren't right, but then it is over 30 years old so it's to be expected.

I know that a lot of people are feeling the presure at the moment, but ever time you feel like that, go and watch your video you took of your first drive in Bollyknickers..... bet it makes you feel happy again!
And that's the point! They're expensive, sometimes unreliable, slow, cumbersome, and old, with crap heating (in most) but they make us smile! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Onwards and upwards Ricky. You really do have a very good van. Take a look through the full on resto therads and that might make you feel better. I've learned loads about my van over the years. They are well made and very basic simple and well enginered. Over time you will fix it and iron out all the problems, then you can just use it and enjoy it.
What ever problems you do find, i'm sure other people have had the same before and can advise. ;)

It will cost you a new engine if you don't do as suggested. :) Glass half full?

with the help offered, and the luck i've had in it not going pop thus far, i'm fairly optimistic, but while we are talking straight what damage could be waiting to be discovered due to hot running?

cheers mate there is tin missing and tonight we found out all the thermostat and flaps have been removed, it's no use just putting it back together as was now, it's got to be put right, the heating now goes to the bottom of the pile, i'm amazed if so much has been dogged how i've done over 1000 miles in the last few months.

  17. my bug has never had a stat and flaps i think flaps theres lots of air-cooled running without em

yeah possibly so, but it's off the road now,and we are out of camping season, so i might as well get it as good as i can now so it is reliable from march on
