In the old days we might have used our air force or even the fleet air arm to guard the airspace. That's before we thought it a better idea to equip air craft carriers with no aircraft, or scrap our in flight re-fuelling ability. Some in-effective ground to air political pandering exercise is far cheaper and who cares if it ticks the bare arse minimum box.
