Car docs and first aid kit poss? On top of @cunny44 list. You're meant to have them in Spain.
We got stopped by the gendarmes last year as we were speeding on the mway when it was down to one lane. As it was a set up we had to watch an educational film about the dangers to road workers. We were pulled into an aire and there was a gazebo set up with lap top and a few road workers and a smashed up road worker van.
We looked suitably ashamed and were given coffees :)
As neither myself or my friend Vernon spoke French it was conducted through one gendarme who spoke Spanish (as did I)
I explained that we didn't know you had to slow down for when a lane was blocked off even without any signs/people working on it and that we were v sorry and would know in future.

The gendarme had a look in our van which was full of radiators and tools as we were fitting central htg in verns house in Spain. We had hi viz, headlight things and a triangle but not the rest tho he didn't ask us. He did ask for pwk tho. I explained verns wife was flying out to join us and so we would ask her to bring it - we did as Guardia civil in Spain stricter.

All in all they were v pleasant and after our coffee waved us off with a cheery au revoir! :)

    Bon voyage :)

    ^That’s wrong.
cunny44 list is correct but you also need to carry the V5c.
E85 is now being sold in our local supermarket, E10 is common especially on motorways but E5 is easy to find. All you need to do is read what’s written on the pump, if it says E85 or E10 go somewhere else.

Personally I wouldn't go without good European breakdown cover.
If £80 covers full repatriation etc I'd just pay it to be honest if it is comparable with RAC etc.

When we went 2 years ago France/Belgium/Holland/Germany looking in to the breakdown cover was a nightmare you have to watch them some of the things in the small print.

A limit on the amount they will pay for recovery one was £1000 only
they will recover the van back to the UK in their own time (could be months)
they will not cover the cost of accommodation
if you broke down on the french motorway they would not pay the recovery to get you off the motorway
    Accident cover was not included
If you became ill and there was another person with a licences they would not pay

We went with the AA in the end luckily we did not need it
