Television Singing Talent Shows

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by marvel, Dec 9, 2012.

  1. So, I sit on my IPad most weekends whilst the missus watches talent shows for singers and we discuss the pros and cons of such programmes.
My argument is that people that are truly talented and are worthy of listening to, get record deals, or become known anyway. Her argument is that these shows are a good way for people to get their talent to as many people as possible. Many of the acts that have actually been successful over the past few years haven't even been the winners, but the shows have given them a platform.
There is no doubt that some of these performers such as Olly Murs, JLS, Leona Lewis and Kelly Clarkson have been VERY successful, but what are your thoughts regardless of your musical preference, remember, everyone likes a bit of pop from manufactured bands.......?!

I think its harder for real talent to be heard these days so this kind of show can help but at the end of the day its just a money making scheme. A way to fleece the public before a single song is recorded let alone on the shops.

  6. The X factor is absolute tosh, and goes against everything that i think is important in music, as in actual musical talent. That show is devoid of it.

Iam off me soapbox now, will go n put some metal on me ipod:)

  9. Its not about the style of music ill listen to anything from iron maiden to elvis.

I Just hate the commercial aspect of the program it is not a talent contest its another vehicle for simon cowel and itv to make a lot of money.

  10. I agree about the commercialism but I reckon tonight's X factor winner was a great departure from the usual type of winners.

  11. Maybe? Time will tell i guess he seems a nice guy hope winning it does not end his career!

  12. Ha ha so you watched it then ;D

  13. Perhaps slightly (or for that matter) massively off post, my own fav group LED ZEP , was a constructed , put together , assembled , picked for stardom boy band , by the great Jimmy Page, he asked musio peeps for reccommendations , he went to see many musicians/singers, and hand picked the other 3 members >nothing much changed then.>>>imo its the method of delivery to the public thats changed,i opinion the popularity of that show is simply a reflection akin to holding up a mirror to the world we all live in/contribute 2.(now where did i put that Led Zep 4 album......)

It's hardly a new phenomenon is it, just an update of 60's and 70's stuff like Opportunity Knocks or Search for a Star
. Plenty of acts came through them and went on to have good long careers , even more disappeared without trace.
Anyone remember the Monkees? The original manufactured band put together for a Saturday night tv show, don't think they did too bad out of it.
Having said that I've never watched a single Xfactor or Brits got talent. Hate those shows.

  18. Cowel is a multi millionaire for a reason, he has good business sense. As to whether x-factor is any good? Well these artists are not artists they are just singers of someone else's music. How often do you hear from the winners of previous shows? Baring the odd one here and there.

  19. they have singing talent shows....

    musta missed them... ^-^

you'll be telling me there are miserable soap operas next ..
