    I was just listening to a recording of David Attenborough and he reminded us that the name "penguin" used to refer to the extinct Northern hemisphere Great Auk (last one eaten by fishermen on a Scottish island two centuries ago) , and it was only when whalers went south they found birds that looked like them so use the same name.
