  5. Lutterworth.... We have a problem!!
Popped out in the bus yesterday, for the first time since our mammoth trek across Europe. Started up ok, although was struggling to tick over at first but then when she got warmed up was idling fine. Did seem a bit lacking in power but then picked up and, just when I was thinking everything was tickety boo and I'd got a bit of speed up, she spluttered, let the biggest two farts out I've ever heard and conked. Engine was very hot for such a short run (oil level fine). I let her cool a bit and she started up again and limped home. I'm running an Empi Pict 34 single carb, and an SSP 034 dizzy with electronic ignition, which has been perfect over the last 3 years and recently got me nearly 6k miles around Europe. I can't find any air leaks so I've ordered a new Bosch coil and a replacement accuspark igniter and some new HT leads.
I will blindly start swapping stuff out in the hope I can get there and hopefully comandeer Mike to check my set up and test anything that I've swapped out unnecessarily that I can keep as on board spares ;)

Is the fan going round? They can tear off the centre hub.

  8. Hi Zed, yep. I took the air hose off the fan housing to check and it's definitely pumping air out.

  9. I've been on tinterweb and they say an electronic ignition module or coil can make the engine run hot and backfire so I will try swapping them out when they come ;)

It would be really useful to look at some Propex (or similar) heater positions before I commit and fit mine this winter. Under the bench seat, underneath the van, walkway or other locations that I could take a gander at would be really useful at TE next weekend.
I understand @Zed fitted his in the spare wheel well. As I have a LHD with cupboards over that, it would be useful to understand how the hot air out and recirculation works in this position and would it work with my configuration.
Thanks and see you on Friday.

I chopped out all but the top inch of the spare wheel well. Technically my fire wall is no longer a fire wall either. Both in and out enter van under the bed with out extended to the board so it gets recirculation air from under the bed.

To be clear I still have the complete screw on firewall, but to the side the spare wheel well and rear wheel tub + a small bit of plate complete the sealing off and once the wheel well is gone the fuel tank area is no longer sealed. First time I did this was the 68, but they never had the screw on firewall in the first place. I'll post a few pics when I get back to the computer.

One consideration you must make is where the inlet exhaust go through the battery tray. so as not to limit battery length I made a cradle for the battery tray that lifts the battery over the lip towards the engine with the inlet and exhaust behind.
