Trying to sort out the tailgate leak. So far - Replaced the tailgate seal Removed and refurbed the lock. After replacing the seal it rained and all was dry, but today I had water on the drivers (RHD) side. Its hard to say, but looks like it comes in at the top. Can i adjust the mounts? Bentley manual does not mention the tailgate ? What are my options...
I think there is some adjustment in the hinge bolts in the frame of the tailgate, isn't there? Someone else will surely know, but I vaguely remember having to tweak around a bit when I replaced mine...
Great, i can’t see past the head board, out with the screwdrivers and have a look. Thanks, weird Bentley doesn’t cover the tailgate
There`s plenty of adjustment just be careful when you`re test closing and use tape if you slacken off the four countersunk securing bolts ... Are you aware the mechanism has (for some bizarre reason) TWO latching positions and are you certain it`s closing on the second tighter setting ?? If you don`t believe me , lift up the tailgate and finger close the `claw` , it`ll click once and lock . Close it even more to the second click and you`ll see what i mean - same for the cab doors ...
No, open the tailgate and loosen the screws on the hinge to tailgate slightly then shut it again and push in a bit to tighten it against the seal, then tighten again!
The problem will be if somebody let the tailgate hang off the arms as they tightened the bolts as then the top will poke out when they tighten the bolts. Need a friend or a support.
Hey Lasty, yes I picked that up when cleaning the lock. Min only latches on the 1st click at the moment. I am hope the adjustment will help sort that and the leak. At least the unlock works now
Ok, can I convience the OH to stand holding the tailgate ? I think i’ll put her glass of wine in the back of the van and collar her when she comes to collect.
..mine was leaking badly and I tried all sorts of adjustements..it tuned out the tailgates top lip was bent..so I gave it few taps with the mallet and it seems fine now..it needs replacing anyway..so pour some water on it and investigate where the water gets trough and then have a good look... If you fit the tailgate too high it peels the top of the seal out as it closes and puts it back when you open it. It's well worth inspecting what's happening as you open and close it.
^all of the above. Adjust the tailgate by (slightly) loosening the four mounting bolts on the hinge arms. Close it slowly, or if it’s mis-aligned it’ll knock chunks out of your paint. As @zedders says, have a squint at the upper corners. The seal’s not clipped in, and the tailgate may rub and dislodge it (then squish it again when it’s closed). A good squirt will silicone spray might help (or just Evostik the corner bits).
I meant more in the middle. You can probably feel it thunk past the seal if you slowly close it even if it's adjusted right.
It actually took a full bottle of wine, but I think it looks better now. Used a piece of paper around the closed tailgate to check where it was tight & loose against the rubber. Overall fit and position is much better too Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
