T2 gearstick?

  1. Just wondering what gear shift we all have?

I have the original but it has massive play in it, does anyone have anything else they would recommend?

    Empi
    Scat
    etc

  2. The play's mainly caused by wear in the linkage parts. Replace these and the slop should be gone.

I've got a Berg shifter, but changed the linkage bits first.

  3. Cheers for this Snotty

Is this a pretty straight forward thing to do? or is it a case of getting a mechanic on board?

  4. Have a search on here. The main culprit is usually the coupler at the back of the gear shift shaft, by the gearbox.

Get under your van and take a look...once you've worked out how everything works (it's simple), easy to work out what needs changing. It's not a difficult job.

  5. Also check the circular bush at the front under the gear stick - you'll need to take off the front under tray. Mine had completely gone.

  7. brill mate ! thats a can of worms ! me ? in the minority EMPI shifter , fitted and lovely gearchange !

  9. oh and I have a vintage speeds classic shifter which works well but has more free play than I expected due to the "pull up to select reverse" mechanism hitch is tight ish at the base of the shifter but feels a bit sloppier t the lever. shift slowly though.

  10. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

Even with an aftermarket shifter you need all the parts above ^ to be in good order so it makes sense to do them first.
He means replacing the coupler, but here is another can of worms. lol This is because new ones are all such poor quality the common consensus is the only reliably usable bits are the plastic bushes, so best to make a good one out of your old one and the new one. That's assuming you have an original.

  11. thanks zed. just seen what a mess the spell checker made of my last post. very unlikely to be the bottle of wine I drank before making it.

  12.
  13. Ive got a CSP shifter. Super high quality (not like the exhausts which are poo poo). Slight sideways movement when in gear but not surprising considering the leverage.

  14. I too have a CSP shifter. Its vey good and I dont believe i'd have got over the alps with the old stock one.

  15. I have just (sunday eve) fitted a Bug Tech! seems like very nice bit of kit, but i've still got a couple of bushes to change before i do a review, but so far seems very good!

  16. My gear change was all over the place when i got my bay. replaced all the bushes and the rear linkage while the engine and gearbox were out. Put it all together. still rubbish. in the end it was the actual gearstick its self. the ball and socket were really worn. Mine was not easy to source as the front linkage is no longer available for a 71/72 bus. found a NOs one on here. bought a gear stick from Heritage. It was aweful and needed all the sharp edges taking off it where it had been badly cast.

any way, all is now like new.
